KEYNOTE ADDRESS
Reflections on the Causes of Health Disparities

Harold P. Freeman, MD
Medical Director, The Polo Ralph Lauren Cancer Center and
Director of Surgery, North General Hospital in Harlem, NY

In 1990, Dr. Harold P. Freeman published a report with Dr. Colin McCord, which revealed that African American men in Harlem were less likely to reach the age of 65 than men living in Bangladesh. Two years after that study, the Harlem Health Promotion Center (HHPC) sought to access the health status, health compromising, and health seeking behaviors of Harlem residents by conducting the Harlem Household Study. After a decade of work, HHPC is about to release HARLEM UpClose, a groundbreaking report that explores the many health issues affecting the residents of Harlem. HARLEM UpClose contains data compiled from the Harlem Household Survey and examines trends for a variety of health status indicators. To better understand how Harlem’s health compares to that of other communities, the data are presented relative to those for the city, the state and the nation.
