Summer Intensive English Language Program (SIELP)

SIELP is a free program designed for English Language learners who are now in their 8th grade, and who wish to study English for 6 weeks during the summer in preparation for high school. The program will run Mon-Fri, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, July 6th-August 16th, 2006.

SIELP is designed for students who are at the intermediate or advanced level of English proficiency and who are strongly motivated to learn. This program is a collaborative project of the City University of New York and the NYC Board of Education.

The Intensive English Language Program, now in its tenth year of operation, is a collaborative project of The City University of New York and The New York City Department of Education.

Spend a summer studying on a campus of The City University of New York and learn the reading, writing, and oral communication skills necessary for success in high school.


Who can attend?
English Language Learners (ELLs) who are now 8th graders and who wish to study English for six weeks during the summer before entering high school. The program is designed for students who are at the intermediate or advanced level of English language proficiency and who are strongly motivated to learn.

When?
July 6th - August 16th, 30 hours per week, Monday - Friday, from 9:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M.

Where?
Students may choose to attend the CUNY program at LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City, Queens; New York City College of Technology in downtown Brooklyn; Bronx Community College in the Bronx; or The City College of New York in Manhattan.

What will students do?
Improve their English language skills in preparation for high school and the Regents Comprehensive Examination in English through:

  • intensive English language study;
  • the resources of a City University of New York college campus, including the library, cultural exhibits, computer labs, and recreational facilities;
  • field trips in the New York City area related to the curriculum;
  • computer instruction for word processing, Internet research, and interactive e-mail communication projects;
  • reading good books and writing stories and essays;
  • attending the year-round Saturday High School Transition Program.

Who will teach?
Experienced English language teachers, teaching assistants, tutors, and counselors.

Is there a charge?
The program is free, including breakfast, lunch and metrocards.
