MIT's Lincoln Laboratory's fundamental mission is to apply science and advanced technology to critical problems of national security, primarily working on sensors, information extraction (signal processing and embedded computing), and communications. Biomedical Engineer Alutiiq LLC | Bethesda, MD
- Candidate will be required to install, modify, troubleshoot, maintain, test, calibrate, adjust, overhaul and repair a wide variety of medical, laboratory, and dental equipment (electronic, electrical, and mechanical).
- Typical examples of equipment serviced include radiographic diagnostic and treatment units, cardiac defibrillators, hemodialysis units, ultracentrifuges, spectrophotometers, ultrasonic therapy equipment, electrophoresis apparatus, gas chromatographs, electron microscopes, X-ray units, electrocardiograph machines, cardiac monitors, electrosurgical units, electroencephalographs and radiography high speed film processors.
- Maintains and repairs chemical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, vacuum, suction and pressure systems which may include water, steam, air, gas under pressure, and piped oxygen lines associated with equipment serviced.
- Determines nature and extent of repairs required by troubleshooting equipment for malfunctions, requiring the tracing of wiring, replacing broken or worn parts, detecting leaks, feedback, and interference.
- Determine voltage tolerances, amperage, power supplies, wave shape, frequency resonance, deflection time, decay curve, gain balance, and signal sensitivity and comparing against prescribed tolerances and specifications.
- Plans and carries out work assignments using blueprints, schematic drawings, technical manuals, wiring diagrams, liquid/air flow sheets, and other specifications.
- Test equipment after repair and tests new equipment to assure proper functioning.
Conducts preventive maintenance inspection of equipment.
- Performs periodic checks to ensure that equipment users are following proper preventive maintenance procedures.
- Conducts on-the-job training for all equipment users and biomedical repair technicians in the maintenance of medical, laboratory, and dental equipment.
- ndependently determines the nature of trouble and extent of repairs required and completes repairs following established trade practices and procedures, using technical manuals, blueprints, sketches, wiring diagrams, liquid and air flow sheets, and other specifications.
- Performs operational and safety tests after repairs have been completed or when new equipment is received to assure that equipment is operating within prescribed limits so that lives are not endangered.
- Maintain records of repair and maintenance as prescribed by the customer.
- Must have an Associate Degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology or equivalent military training and at least 2 years experience in the maintenance, calibration, and repair of biomedical/dental systems is desirable.
- Must possess the practical knowledge of the principles of electronic circuits, functions of electronic components, including X-ray tubes, in order to diagnose malfunctions, repair and test such electronic equipment as electrocardiographs, defibrillators, heart oscilloscopes, electron microscope, electroencephalographs, and spectrophotometers.
- Possess the knowledge of the relationships between electrical and electronic circuitry as well as the interrelationship of chemical, radiological, hydraulic, pneumatic, vacuum, or gas components of a piece of equipment or a system.
- Must possess a thorough knowledge of the principles and theories governing the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment in order to diagnose malfunctions, and repair and test such electrical equipment as sterilizers, and film driers, suction apparatus, and dental units.
- Must apply knowledge of hydraulic systems including their grips, locks, stop and release mechanisms, and have the ability to determine proper adjustment with no leaks.
- Must possess the ability to repair mechanical equipment such as sterilizers, X-ray tables, operating tables, pressure breathing therapy units, respirators, and other mechanical assemblies using gears, shafts, and pulleys.
- Must have the ability to select proper replacement parts, modification kits, and identify materials, mechanisms, and components of electrical systems.
- Must possess a thorough knowledge of electronic symbols, color codes, descriptions, and manufacturer????????s numbers.
- Must have skills and precision in working with small components, requiring good hand and eye coordination and functional color vision.
- Must possess a thorough knowledge in the use of electronic test equipment such as digital multi-meters, oscilloscopes and signal generators.
- Must have the ability to use electrical test equipment such as meggers, ohmmeters and test meters.
- Must be skilled in the use of such equipment as micrometers and calipers to detect wear and misalignment of gears, cams, valves and other mechanical parts; and ability to use seat wrenches and pressure gauges when working on hydraulic systems.
- Must possess the ability to interpret and apply blue prints, schematic drawings, wiring diagrams, liquid/air flow sheets, technical manuals, and other specifications.
- Must be knowledgeable in making various mathematical computations using algebraic expressions and shop formulas in relation to load requirements of wiring and equipment.
- Certified by the International Certification Commission as a Certified Biomedical Repair Technician (CBET) is desirable.
- Must demonstrate familiarity and understanding of current technology changes in the biomedical engineering discipline.
- Must be able to operate under broad guidelines and general supervision and is technically responsible for the quality of work accomplished.
- Ability to take independent action in solving problems that arise.
- Must be able to function individually in the performance of the duties and responsibilities of this position description, with supervisory controls exercised over the position being general in nature and usually dealing with matters related to overall objectives, policies and operations of the Biomedical Engineering Division.

Clinical Research Coordinator I Partners HealthCare System | Boston, MA
This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to gain knowledge and practical experience in human psychophysiology and neuroimaging research. The position is best suited for an individual with a strong technical and clinical aptitude who seeks laboratory experience in preparation for a career in medicine or clinical sciences.
A full-time Research Assistant is sought for work on several projects that combine psychophysiology with neuroimaging. The central research program seeks to understand the overlapping neural circuitry involved in breathing and anxiety. The position involves testing psychiatric patients and healthy individuals with a variety of psychophysical and neuroimaging techniques (i.e., functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)). The primary responsibilities are to: 1) recruit and enroll participants in studies 2) administer screening and psychological questionnaires 3) assist with psychophysiological and neuroimaging studies 4) conduct data/image analysis. A dministrative duties include: database maintenance, assisting with regulatory (IRB) documentation and ordering equipment.
Candidates should have proficiency with common computing packages such as MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint; and also have some familiarity with one or more of the following (Linux, MATLAB, SPM, FSL). The job requires an individual who is mature, flexible, with s trong interpersonal skills, and sensitivity towards psychiatric illness. T he candidate must have comfort with technical equipment/apparatus, excellent organizational skills and be able to maintain accurate records with careful attention to detail . The position calls for a high degree of motivation and self-sufficiency, although extensive training and supervision will be provided.
