    James Oakes will speak on the topic "How the Conflict over Slavery Became Irreconcilable."

    Professor James Oakes, distinguished professor of History at the CUNY Graduate Center, will speak on the topic "How the Conflict over Slavery Became Ireconcilable." Professor Oakes has studied slavery, antislavery, and the origins of the Civil War for nearly thirty years. His most recent book is Freedom National: The Destruction of Slavery in the United States, 1861-1865. Sponsored by the Rifkind Center and the Department of History.
