    City College Center for the Arts presents Septeto Nacional de Cuba Ignacio Piñeiro with Cuco Valoy

    The City College Center for the Arts presents an exciting concert in Aaron Davis Hall with two phenomenal artists. Septeto Nacional de Cuba Ignacio Piñeiro is one of Cuba’s national treasures. Developing and mastering the art of the Cuban son for nearly 86 years the globetrotting septet will celebrate their 2013 Latin Grammy nomination in an evening of Cuban Son.  Also joining Septeto Nacional for the first time as a special guest will be the Dominican Republic’s premier sonero, improvisational singer Cuco Valoy.  
    This event was curated by Nelson Radhames Rodriguez WHCR Host and Producer of La Hora del Son con Nelson y Ramon…celebrating its 15th Anniversary.

    Septeto Nacional is considered the institution of Cuban son with Ignacio Piñero one of the founders with deep roots of this home grown authentic Cuban genre.  One of the planted seeds of music placed in Cuban soil the original son features a contra bass, a bongo, a tres (six stringed lute guitar) alongside one or two improvisational singers. By the early twenties a young Ignacio Piñero added a trumpet as the lead solo instrument changing the sound of son that quickly became the national genre of Cuba. By 1927 Septeto Nacional was born creating a sensation in Havana as well as becoming a standard bearer for the son that forms the basis of mambo and salsa. Friends with fellow songwriter George Gershwin who quoted Ignacio Piñero in his Cuban Carnival composition, Septeto Nacional performed internationally from Chicago, Illinois to Seville, Spain.

    A descendent of the changui, the seed from where the son was sprung, the genre sprouted at the end of the 19th century when African beats and Spanish melodies danced together in the anonymity of Cuban coffee plantations in the province of Oriente.

    "What Piñeiro did was introduce the elements of rumba into the popular dance music of Cuba," says Francisco Oropesa-Fernandez, who is Ricardo's brother and plays bongos with the current Septeto Nacional. "He created a genre called rumba son that added the clave (a two-bar rhythmic pattern that anchors Afro-Cuban rhythm) to the son. In doing that, he brought in the elements of Africa that drew from his own roots in the Santeria Abakua religion." SF Chronicle

    After 76 years, Septeto Nacional returned to the U.S. in 2009 and is back to celebrate its 2013 Latin Grammy Nomination.

    Enchanting audiences around the world with his bewitching style of improvisational son, salsa, merengue, bachata and bolero, in addition to playing and singing Afro-Dominican folk styles like palo, Dominican born Cuco Valoy has been mesmerizing fans since the 50s. Not only has Valoy’s career run the gamut of Dominican musical forms, he has also seen the music from the vantage point of singer, percussionist, guitarist, producer, and even on-air disc jockey. Known chiefly as a vocalist, Valoy recorded both the rhythm guitar and the bongo for the son duo Los Ahijados which he fronted with his brother Martin, and often played piano or bass on his later merengue recordings. Many of the early merengues de guitarra recorded by bachateros like Edilio Paredes and Ramon Cordero featured Valoy on tambora. As a producer he worked with pioneering musicians like Bernardo Ortiz and Antonio Gomez Salcedo, and he was recognized by no less a figure than Radio Guarachita founder Radhames Aracena as having been the first radio disc jockey in the Dominican Republic to play bachata on the air.

    Valoy was born in 1937 in Mano Guayabo, near the capital of Santo Domingo.
