    Dr. Frank Nitsche, will discuss sediment distribution and dynamic in the Hudson River Estuary.

    Sediment processes in estuaries are controlled by the interaction of factors that include tides, fresh water inputs, bed morphology, sediment supply, and hydrodynamics. The interaction of these factors strongly influences the pattern of sediment deposition. The ability to quantify sediment deposition on a regional scale will improve the understanding of the underlying processes, and provide valuable information for managing estuarine systems. A comprehensive dataset of high-resolution acoustic data and sediment samples from the Hudson River provides detailed information of sediment distribution for the entire estuary. In addition to regional trends the data reveal significant local variations. We quantified the variations in deposition of several sections of the estuary by combining the acoustic data with geochemical analysis of the sediment samples. While the overall rate of sediment accumulation is ~3 mm/y, it can reach locally over 8 mm/y whereas other areas show no depositional. These local variations are controlled by natural processes but they are also the result of human alterations and use.
