Allen Ellenzweig, author of THE HOMOEROTIC PHOTOGRAPH: MALE IMAGES FROM DURIEU/DELACROIX
TO MAPPLETHORPE, will offer an illustrated presentation on famed photographer George Platt Lynes.

"George Platt Lynes (1907 – 1955) was an American fashion and commercial photographer.

"Born in East Orange, New Jersey, he spent his childhood in New Jersey but attended the Berkshire School in Massachusetts. He was sent to Paris in 1925 with the idea of better preparing him for college. His life was forever changed by the circle of friends that he would meet there. Gertrude Stein, Glenway Wescott, Monroe Wheeler and those that he met through them opened an entirely new world to the young artist."

"In the mid-1940s Lynes left New York for Hollywood where he photographed stars such as Katharine Hepburn, Rosalind Russell, Gloria Swanson, and Orson Welles. In the late 1940s he moved back to New York where he became acquainted with Dr. Alfred Kinsey, who was researching sexuality and homosexuality at the time."

"In an era when erotic photography of the male nude was taboo, Lynes was a true pioneer, composing stunningly beautiful pictures, revolutionary in their originality and sexually charged themes. The quantity, subject and quality of his work was prodigious for its time. With the privilege of hindsight, we can see the enormous influence of Lynes' art on virtually all of the important photographers of the male nude that followed him."
