Dominic Orr: Turning Ideas into Successful Businesses

Silicon Valley is fueled by innovation. It’s a place full of people who have extraordinary ideas and a drive to see them realized. While headlines about spectacular IPOs and acquisitions generate excitement over the “next big thing,” the reality is that most start ups face a number of challenges before they succeed. Based on firsthand experience and observations made over the last two decades in Silicon Valley, Dominic Orr (BS ’73) will discuss the factors that give rise to success and failure in the industry, and offer insights to the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators who are considering joining today’s most exciting tech companies or venturing forth with passionate ideas of their own.

Dominic Orr received a Bachelor of Science in Physics from The City College of New York in 1973 and went on to earn a Master of Science in Physics and a PhD in Neurobiology from the California Institute of Technology. While constructing experimental equipment for his dissertation at Cal Tech, Orr became interested in the possibilities of computer networking technologies. After working for HP in this field for over a decade, Dominic caught the "startup bug" and spent the next two decades managing, creating, and merging over a dozen startups in Silicon Valley. Orr is CEO of Aruba Networks, the secure wireless leader for enterprises, where his ambition is to build the "biggest small company" in the industry.
