ABSTRACT: There are significant challenges in the dispersion of carbon nanotubes into polymeric resins and the processing of the resulting nanocomposites, PNC, into structured products with desired functionalities. Here results associated with the incorporation of multi-walled nanotubes into monoacrylate-terminated poly(ethylene glycol), poly(butylene terephthalate), poly(ether ether ketone), poly(vinylidene fluoride), Nylon 11, and epoxy resins will be presented. It will be shown that mixing needs to take place under optimum conditions, preferably guided by rheological characterization as a control tool, and conditions that result in the demixing and reagglomeration of the nanotubes need to be identified and eliminated. It will be shown that nanotubes introduce significant changes in crystallinity and crystalline morphologies for some semi-crystalline polymers and alter the rates of curing for thermosetting polymers. Finally, it will be demonstrated that various properties, including the viscoelasticity, electrical properties, swelling behavior, and flammability of shaped PNCs, are intimately related to the dispersion states of the nanotubes.
