Diana Wall presents "Seneca Village: Unearthing a Forgotten Community."

Diana diZerega Wall, an archaeologist, is Professor of Anthropology at City College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.  She received her Ph.D. from New York University and studies American culture, specializing in the archaeology of New York City, and has examined the city from the Dutch colonial period through the 19th century.

Working with scholars from Columbia as well as with City College students, she is co-directing a long-term research project on Seneca Village, the 19th-century African-American and Irish community that was located in today's Central Park.  The team undertook excavations at the site in the summer of 2011.

In addition to numerous articles and several other books, Wall has written Unearthing Gotham, the Archaeology of New York City (with Anne-Marie Cantwell, Yale 2001).  She is currently working on In Hudson’s Wake: The Archaeology of New Netherland (with Cantwell, under contract to Yale) and a book on urban archaeology (with Nan A. Rothschild, under contract to the University of Florida Press).
