Barbara Zajc, CCNY: "Novel Approaches to Fluoroorganics via Electrophilic Fluorination Chemistry"
Abstract
Introduction of fluorine into organic molecules can substantially alter their chemical, physical and biological properties. Fluorinated organic compounds are of wide importance in fields such as agrochemicals, materials, and pharmaceuticals. Currently, over 150 commercial pharmaceutical compounds contain a fluorine atom. Despite this high demand, introduction of fluorine into organic molecules remains a challenging task. For facile entry to a diverse range of fluoroorganic compounds we have been developing modular synthesis approaches via fluorinated building blocks and investigating their utilities in organic synthesis. The talk will focus on two parts, both involving fluorination chemistry. The first part is the development and utility of a fluoroorganic toolbox. The second part involves synthesis of fluorinated polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons for chemical carcinogenesis studies. Here synthesis of 6-fluorobenzo[a]pyrene metabolites and their nucleosides adducts will be discussed, followed by the development of methodology for the regiospecific fluorination of benzo[c]phenanthrene, chrysene and benzo[g]chrysene.
