No. 7 Subway Extension Underpinning and Construction Under the 8th Ave. SubwayThe lecture describes a combination of underpinning and other construction methods used for the No. 7 Subway Line Extension under the existing 8th Avenue subway. Construction and underpinning methods were developed to address numerous engineering challenges, actual structure constraints, and geotechnical field conditions. Combinations of mini-piles, steel framing and concrete supports were used to ensure structural integrity, safe and efficient construction, and uninterrupted subway service.
The lecture includes:
• History of the existing station complex.
• Existing structure condition and deteriorations.
• Some of the repairs that were made during previous station rehabilitation.
• Structural design challenges associated with the design of No. 7 subway extension under the 42nd Street subway station structure.
Speaker: Aram Grigoryan is a Senior Engineering Manager and a Senior Professional Associate at Parsons Brinckerhoff. Mr. Grigoryan has 30 years of extensive structural engineering experience in major underground structures. His expertise includes design, rehabilitation, underpinning, construction staging, and construction support. Mr. Grigoryan is a graduate of Moscow Institute of Transportation Engineering, where he has received his M.S. degree in Structural Engineering with specialization in Bridges, Tunnels, Subways, Underground Structures. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and Structural Engineering Institute (SEI). He is a licensed Professional Engineer and is registered in New York, New Jersey, and Illinois. Mr. Grigoryan has authored several papers on underground design, rehabilitation, construction, and underpinning that were presented and published at national and international tunneling conferences.
