TITLE:  "The Microstructure, Rheology, and Processing of Carbon Nanotube Suspensions"

ABSTRACT:  The presentation will begin with an overview of ongoing research activities in the Complex Fluids Laboratory (CFL) at the University of Connecticut. Key findings on the microstructure and rheology of carbon nanotube suspensions will then be presented. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are rolled cylinders of graphene sheets with an aspect ratio > 1000. The high aspect ratio of CNT implies a small amount of material (typically 1% wt. or less) is required for electrostatic dissipation in polymer composites. However, the high-aspect-ratio of CNTs also results in significant viscosity enhancements, posing a processing challenge. The presentation will cover both experimental studies and rheological modeling of CNTs suspended in epoxy and acrylic as well as some recent developments in spinning CNT fibers using superacids.
