"Magnetic deflagration and detonation waves in crystals of molecular magnets..."

SPEAKER: Dr. Mikhail Modestov, AlbaNova University Centre, Nordita

"Magnetic deflagration and detonation waves in crystals of molecular magnets in comparison with chemical combustion."

    Abstract.
Thinking about combustion process in the most general sense we can treat it as a process of matter transformation from one state to another, which happens in a very localized region. Relatively new combustion-like process has been discovered in crystals of molecular magnets where magnetization reversal may happens in a form of spins avalanche. Due to close resemblance to chemical combustion and substantially subsonic velocities of the magnetization reversal wave the process has been call as magnetic deflagration. We have studied stability of the magnetic deflagration front to one-dimensional perturbations if the energy barrier of the magnets is sufficiently high in comparison to the Zeeman energy release. Apart from the magnetic deflagration we have demonstrated possibility of magnetic detonation in molecular magnet crystals, as a front of a leading shock and Zeeman energy release zone. Similarities and distinctions with respective combustion phenomena are discussed throughout the talk.
