Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Programming
The Counseling Center provides assessment to students with drug and alcohol problems, treatment in the form of short term to mid-term therapy, and liaison to treatment options within the community. Even if a student is linked with a treatment program within the community, the Counseling Center provides continued adjunct support through individual and group sessions as needed.
We have a certified alcohol and substance abuse counselor (e.g. CASAC-t) who has several years of experience in the field of substance abuse specifically in outpatient, residential, court, family, and opiate treatment therapy.
We have developed literature specifically for CCNY students who may be prone to addiction problems including education on drugs, an alcohol questionnaire, and a list of multiple treatment options.
Workshops are regularly delivered providing education regarding the dangers of over the counter/ prescription drugs.
All trainees, peer counselors, and the Prevention Network of Peers are given specific training in identification of substance abuse and dependence, signs of abuse, as well as options for treatment for students.
Programming in the Towers: Individual sessions, group sessions, and psychoeducational workshops are provided regularly for students who live on campus who have been found to be in violation of the Drug and Alcohol Policy.
We maintain relationships with community agencies such as The Addictions Institute who specialize in substance abuse, dependence, and treatment. We refer students in need to these agencies for treatment.
We provide education and referrals to 12 step programs including Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Marijuana Anonymous, and Narcotics Anonymous. In addition, we provide information for family members impacted by the substance abuse of a member of the family and referrals to community supports like Al Anon and Narc Anon.
We coordinate with the Psychological Center regarding referrals, community resources, and on-campus issues regarding substance abuse trends and prevention.
Our evaluation, short and mid-term treatment, and facilitated referral system for students with substance issues are all individualized and client centered. We assess each student’s level of insight into the issue, provide psychoeducation which might increase that level of insight, and provide the broadest possible range of appropriate treatment options and ideas, along with our recommendations tailored to the unique situation.
