THE DIVISION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA

The Instructional Media Division (IM) provides college-wide educational technology support for the City College faculty, students, staff, and administration. Reservations for services are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis; therefore, individuals are encouraged to reserve well in advance of the requested use date. Application forms are available in the IM main office (NAC 5/220). Reservations cannot be made over the telephone, but forms can be faxed, mailed, or hand-delivered.

Multimedia Classrooms
The Division operates the College's multimedia delivery system and schedules use of the classrooms on its network. The system is fiber-based and allows faculty to access and interact with up to six media sources during any class period including: CD-ROM, CD-Interactive, computers (both Windows and Mac), laser videodisc, 16mm film, video, cable television, the Internet, and slides. Each classroom is equipped with a multisync display, a system control panel, and remote control.

Media Showrooms
The IM manages an additional three media showrooms located in the Y-Building: one classroom and two lecture halls. The rooms come equipped with requested hardware. Video projection is available in the large Y-Building showrooms.

Media Production
The IM has the personnel and facilities to create a full range of program types, including in-studio and remote location shoots, using single or multiple-camera techniques.

Post-Production Editing
Editing sessions to shorten, combine, enhance, and reconstitute video programs can be scheduled. Technical support staff is available to aid those individuals who are unfamiliar with the editing process.

Video Production Formats
VHS (1/2" video)

Advanced Technology
Instructional Media supports faculty requests for interactive video/multimedia production and presentation.

Remote Instruction/Long-Distance Learning
Instructional Media operates a remote instruction facility that uses compressed video technology. This facility is available for both formal distance learning courses and ad hoc video conferencing.

Hardware Support
VHS and U-Matic VCRs, color monitors, audiocassette players, laser videodisc players, overhead, opaque, 35mm slide, 16mm, and filmstrip projectors, public address systems, extension cords, carts, film reels are available to faculty, staff, and students for classroom and special use. Faculty and students are responsible for equipment transport. Training workshops can be arranged for individuals unfamiliar with the hardware.

Software

The IM maintains an extensive collection of instructional media programming: laser videodiscs, CD-ROM, video, 16mm film, spoken word sound recordings and slides. All are available for on-campus instructional use. Most titles can be used in classrooms outside the Division as well as in our showrooms and multimedia classrooms. Faculty can also place programming on reserve for student viewing after scheduled class sessions. The IM is a member of the CUNY Instructional Media Consortium and can make arrangements to borrow programming from other CUNY campuses. A listing of available IM and CUNY titles is located in our main office. Programs not held in the collection can be requested for purchase by faculty.

Cassette Duplication

IM can duplicate audiocasettes, VHS and U-Matic videocassettes that are not copyright protected. Copyright infringement is illegal and can result in assessment of a fine. The IM strictly adheres to the U.S. Copyright Law. More information about this is available in the main office.

Advisory Services

Training workshops, program previews, interactive media demos, design consultation, hardware purchase and repair referrals and feasibility analysis of electronic media use can be arranged for interested individuals.
