The Freshman Year Program is a University initiative designed to serve
incoming freshmen at all levels of ability. The primary goal of the program
is to enhance the academic performance of new students and facilitate their
integration into the College. The program has established a broad base
of planning by forming a committee that includes teaching faculty, student
services staff, college administrators and, where appropriate, students.
The components of the Freshman Year Program are:
1. Summer Immersion Program
The Summer Immersion Program is offered in three- and six-week modules to
new and eligible continuing freshmen. The curricular offerings include
all levels of basic skills instruction in English as a Primary Language,
English as a Second Language, Reading, and Mathematics, as well as instruction
in introductory Chemistry. Various sections of freshman composition and
introductory core courses are scheduled together to facilitate students'
development of academically supportive peer relationships and faculty communication
concerning individual students' progress. Introduction to Academic Computing
workshops are also offered to help students develop greater competency in
using computers as tools in college coursework.
Introduction to College and Personal Development, offered to students
in the Summer Program, provides an introduction to the nature of higher
education and a general orientation to the functions and resources of the
College. The course is designed to help students adjust to the College,
develop a greater understanding of the learning process, and acquire essential
academic survival skills.
Student support is also provided through tutoring in the most challenging
skills and early content courses, and peer counseling.
2. January Intersession Program
Reinforcement courses are offered in the January Intersession to improve
borderline students' mastery of remedial and development courses and provide
the opportunity for them to continue these courses beyond the fall semester
and complete them successfully. This eliminates the need for students to
repeat these courses.
3. Fall and Spring Semesters
Student support is provided through the New Student Seminar offered
in the fall and spring semesters to freshmen and transfer students. The
seminar provides very valuable information to help students navigate the
CCNY system and mainstream into college life. Students are oriented to
the various programs, services, and policies of the College. The text published
for the course reflects the perspectives of a broad spectrum of the College
community. The hands-on exercises are designed to help students become
actively engaged with the material and allow for greater understanding of
the seminar.
Library research training, career exploration workshops, financial advisement,
and other information sessions are offered to new students.
The Freshman Year Program promotes a positive adjustment and assimilation
into the College. All components of the program are free.
