2010-2011 Concert Series:

A CELEBRATION OF DOMINICAN CLASSICAL COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS



The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute and the Music Department at The City College of New York are pleased to host this concert series celebrating Dominican classical composers and musicians.

The series is presented by the Association of Dominican Classical Artists, under the artistic direction of President Adán Vásquez, harpist.

All concerts start at 7 p.m. and  will be held on the campus of The City College of New York in the Recital Hall, Shepard Hall, 140th Street and Convent Avenue.

Admission is free for all concerts, but registration is required due to limited seating capacity.

Memorial Tribute Concert Honoring Tilsia Brens

The first concert in the series is a memorial tribute to pianist Tilsia Brens who founded and was the first president of the Association of Dominican Classical Artists in New York. Musicians will share the stage with a selected group of poets, writers, and community leaders who were close friends and acquaintances of Doña Tilsia during her extraordinary career.

El primer concierto de la serie es en memoria de la fundadora y primera presidente de la Asociación de Artistas Clásicos Dominicanos en Nueva York. En el escenario compartirán músicos  y un grupo selecto de poetas, escritores y líderes comunitarios que conocieron de Doña Tilsia a lo largo de su extraordinaria carrera.

This concert honors the renowned Dominican composer Rafael “Bullumba” Landestoy, considered a national treasure by Dominicans the world over. Born and educated in the Dominican Republic, Maestro Landestoy has resided in New York since the 1950s. His beautifully melodic music for piano and guitar was recorded by internationally acclaimed artists such as Daniel Santos and Toña la Negra. An ensemble group will perform several of his compositions arranged for chamber orchestra.


Este concierto rinde homenaje al famoso compositor dominicano Rafael "Bullumba" Landestoy, considerado un tesoro nacional de los dominicanos en todo el mundo. Nacido y educado en la República Dominicana, Maestro Landestoy ha residido en Nueva York desde la década de 1950. Sus bellas melodías para el piano y la guitarra fueron grabadas por aclamados artistas internacionales tales como Daniel Santos y Toña la Negra. Para este concierto un ensemble realizara varias de sus composiciones en arreglos para orquesta de cámara.

Celebrating Dominican Folklore with Maestro Iván Domínguez 


This concert is a celebration of Dominican folkloric music featuring performances of dances spectacularly choreographed by the renowned Dominican scholar, educator, and performer Maestro Iván Domínguez and his Conjunto Folklorico, whose repertoire includes more than 50 dances of Afro-Dominican and colonial Spanish heritage such as merengue, bachata, vals, and mangulina. The music will be performed by a chamber orchestra.

Este concierto es una celebración de la música folklórica dominicana destacando las danzas dominicanas coreografiadas espectacularmente por el reconocido estudioso, educador e intérprete dominicano Maestro Iván Domínguez y su Conjunto Folklórico, cuyo repertorio incluye más de 50 danzas de la herencia colonial española y afro-dominicana tales como el merengue, la bachata, el vals y la mangulina. La música será interpretada por una orquesta de cámara.

This final concert in the series is a celebration in the tradition of the annual concerts of the Association of Dominican Classical Artists, featuring Dominican soloists with orchestral accompaniment playing international as well as Dominican classical music.

Este último concierto de clausura consiste en una celebración en la tradicion de los conciertos anuales de la Asociación de Artistas Clásicos Dominicanos en Nueva York, donde se presentan solistas dominicanos acompañados de orquesta interpretando obras de compositores dominicanos e internacionales.
