| There are five programs offered in the
Graduate Programs in Early Childhood Education:
The Graduate Program Leading to Initial
Certification is Stream A. It is a 40-46 credit program
for individuals who have no prior experience in education. After
completing this program, along with successfully completing the
New York State Teacher Certification Exams (LAST, ATSW, and CST),
the School of Education will recommend a graduate of this program
for State certification.
The Graduate Program Leading to Professional
Certification is Stream B. It is a 30-34 credit program
for individuals who have Initial Certification in Early Childhood
Education (completed at the undergraduate level). After completing
this program and three of years of teaching, the graduate will
be eligible to apply for the New York State Professional Certificate.
The Graduate Program Leading to Initial
Certification for Holders of an Initial Certificate in Childhood
Education is Stream C. This is a 34-37 credit program
for individuals who have Initial Certification in Childhood Education
(completed at the undergraduate level) and want to obtain an initial
certificate in Early Childhood Education through the Master's
Degree. After completing this program and three of years of teaching,
the graduate will be eligible for a Professional Certificate in
both Childhood and Early Childhood Education.
The Certificate Program in Early Childhood Education is Stream D. It is an opportunity for those who already have a Master's Degree and certification in Childhood Education to extend their certification to Early Childhood Education. This program is 15 credits.
The Fast-Track Program to the Initial Certificate (Advanced Certificate). It provide candidates with a "fast-track" to certification so that they can begin working as certified teachers as soon as possible and complete the additional coursework required for a master's degree at a more leisurely pace. This program requires 21 credits of coursework and 6 credits of fieldwork/student teaching to meet certification requirements. It is followed by 19 additional credits for the completion of the master's degree.
