Scholarships & Awards

The School of Education is pleased to announce the scholarships and awards available for Education majors and minors for the 2015-2016 academic year. Please take a moment to review the requirements of the list below. If you meet all the requirements of a particular scholarship or award, we invite you to submit an application. You may apply for up to two (2) scholarships as you qualify for; award reviews and decisions are made by the School of Education Scholarship Committee.

The scholarships and awards for which students can nominate themselves are listed below.  A faculty letter of support is required for those scholarships below indicated with an asterisk (*).  When a faculty letter of support is not required, students may contact a faculty member to ask that s/he support your nomination for the fullest consideration by the scholarship committee. In all cases, the choice to support a student application, however,  rests with the faculty member.

OPEN TO UNDERGRADUATES ONLY

THE BARBARA KRAMES COHEN SCHOALRSHIP
  • Annual scholarship award to students in need of financial assistance in the School of Education who are committed to teaching at the K-12 level in a school district located in an urban area. Funds may be used to support tuition and/or the costs of assessments required in order to obtain certification to teach in a NY state public school.
  • Must be matriculated as an undergraduate and accepted in a major or minor concentration leading to certification as a public school teacher
  • Must have a stated desire to teach in a public school in an urban environment, preferably at the elementary school level
  • May demonstrate they meet one or preferably all of the following criteria:
    • A demonstrated interest in solving current social problems and needs;
    • Are the first member of their family to attend college;
    • Must demonstrate an ability in one of the creative or performing arts.

THE JUDGE HUBERT T. DELANY SCHOLARSHIP $1,000.00

  • Must be a senior (90 credits or more)
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Must be a resident of the greater Harlem community
  • Must have a desire to pursue graduate studies in education at The City College
  • Application for graduate admissions must be on file with admissions office

*THE BERNARD & SUSAN MENDIK EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP $1,000.00

  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Must be a declared major/minor in Education
  • Must be a resident of the South Bronx if possible, any other section of the Bronx next, or from any of the other boroughs of NYC if necessary.
  • Must demonstrate an intention to work

THE DR. ABRAHAM E. KLEIN '33 SCHOLARSHIP $1,000.00
(Scholarship awarded in Fall 2015)

  • Must be a junior (must have earned 60-90 credits)
  • Must be on track to be a Math major planning to teach
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Award presented at the Annual Alumni Dinner

THE WINIFRED AND JOSEPH FEMIANI SCHOLARSHIP $750.00
(Scholarship awarded in Fall 2015)

  • Must be a sophomore (must have earned 30-60 credits)
  • Must be an Education major
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Award presented at the Annual Alumni Dinner


THE REUBEN FUCHS '33 & RUTH FUCHS SCHOLARSHIP $1,000.00
(Scholarship awarded in Fall 2015)

  • Must be a junior (must have earned 60-90 credits)
  • Must be a Secondary Science Major
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Award presented at the Annual Alumni Dinner

*THE EDUCATION ALUMNI GROUP AWARD $1,000.00

  • Must be an upper junior (must have earned 75-90 credits)
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above

*THE LUCY GORDON EDUCATIONAL ALUMNI AWARD $1,000.00
(Scholarship awarded Fall 2015)

  • Must be an upper junior (must have earned 75-90 credits)
  • Must have demonstrated leadership and service to the community
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Award presented at the Annual Education Alumni Dinner


THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AFFILIATE GROUP SCHOLARSHIP (23 CLASSES) $1,000.00

(Scholarship awarded Fall 2015)

  • Must be a sophomore or junior (must have earned 30 - 90 credits)
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Must be an Secondary Education - Art Education student
  • Must demonstrate financial need

*THE ANDREW G. DONALDSON SCHOLARSHIP $500.00
  • Must be a sophomore or junior (must have earned 30 - 90 credits)
  • Must be an Education Major
  • Must have a GPA of 2.5 or above
  • Must be committed to motivating urban, economically disadvantaged youngsters to achieve
  • Must be willing to work in Harlem or similar urban community schools
  • Must demonstrate financial need

*THE DANIEL HOWARD DANIELS SCHOLARSHIP  $1,250.00

(Scholarship awarded Fall 2015)
  • Must be a full time, upper junior student (must have earned 75-90cr)
  • Must be an Education Major
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Must demonstrate financial need

OPEN TO UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS

*THE JACOB HOLMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – Tuition for 2 semesters up to 24 credits total
(Scholarship awarded Fall 2015)
  • Must be a senior (90 credits or more)
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Must be committed to teaching in the New York City public school system
  • Must have a desire to pursue graduate studies in education at The City College
  • Application for graduate admissions must be on file with admissions office
  • Must demonstrate financial need


*THE DR. HOWARD WEXLER SCHOLARSHIP IN EDUCATION - Tuition Support up to $3,300.00
(Scholarship awarded Fall 2015)

  • Must be a declared Major in Education
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to teach in the New York City Education System
  • Must demonstrate financial need

*THE DR. HAROLD KOBLINER TEXTBOOK SCHOLARSHIP - Cost of textbooks for one semester
(Scholarship awarded Fall 2015)
  • Must be a full time student, sophomore or above (must have earned 30 credits or more)
  • Must be an Education Major
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Must have obtained a diploma through the NYC Public School system
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Must live in NYC

FACULTY NOMINATIONS ONLY (STUDENTS MAY NOT APPLY THEMSELVES)

UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS

THE LILLIAN WEBER AWARD  -  (Student Teacher)  $250.00 , (Cooperating Teacher)   $250.00
  • For a student teacher and cooperating teacher who, by working together, contributed to the development of an environment and classroom context that supports learning

THE IRWIN AND RUTH FLEISCHNER SCHOLARSHIP (One scholarship for either UNDERGRADUATE TUITION or GRADUATE TUITION, AWARDED SPRING 2015)

UNDERGRADUATE CRITERIA:
  • Must be a senior (90 credits or more)
  • Must be admitted to the Secondary English or Social Studies Education Program
  • Must have and maintain a GPA of 3.0 overall, with a 3.5 average in their major field  English or History 
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Must be committed to teaching English or Social Studies in a NYC secondary school
  • Applicant must submit a 500-word essay describing their desire to teach English or Social Studies

GRADUATE CRITERIA:

  • Must be admitted to the Secondary English or Social Studies Education Program
  • Must have and maintain a GPA of 3.3
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Must be committed to teaching English or Social Studies in a NYC secondary school
  • Applicant must submit a 500-word essay describing their desire to teach English or Social Studies

THE JOSEPH SCHUR MATHEMATICS PRIZE $500.00
(Three Scholarships awarded to either undergraduates or graduates, in either Spring 2015 or Fall 2015)

UNDERGRADUATE CRITERIA

  • Must be admitted to the Secondary Mathematics Education Program
  • Must have a minimum a GPA of 3.0
  • Must be committed to teaching Mathematics in a NYC secondary school
  • Applicant must submit a 500-word essay describing their desire to teach Mathematics

GRADUATE CRITERIA

  • Must be admitted to the Secondary Mathematics Education Program
  • Must have a minimum a GPA of 3.0
  • Must be committed to teaching Mathematics in a NYC secondary school
  • Applicant must submit a 500-word essay describing their desire to teach Mathematics

  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above

THE PATRICIA BLACK EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD - $1,000
  • Must be enrolled in Educational Leadership Program
  • Must demonstrate leadership ability
  • Must have 3.0 GPA or above

THE DR. JOYCE COPPIN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP - $1,000.00
  • Must be enrolled in Educational Leadership Program
  • Must demonstrate leadership ability
