Graduate Studies in Secondary Science

CCNY offers three options for those interested in a secondary science teacher certification program. Option 1 is a permanent certification plus Master's degree program for teachers who already have a provisional certificate. Option 2 is a provisional certification plus Master's degree program for teacher candidates who do not have certification or a Masters Degree. Option 3 is for teacher candidates who already have a Masters Degree but no certification.

Interested students should apply for admission to the School of Education. Contact Office of Graduate Admissions (212 650-6296) for details on how to apply.

For information on how to apply for graduation and certification when finished, click here. All teacher candidates should also review the CCNY certification website prior to your first and early in your last semester.

All program changes must be requested and approved in writing.

Option 1: Master of Arts Degree in Science Education, Professional Certification

This degree is primarily intended for provisionally certified teachers seeking a Masters degree and permanent certification.

Entrance requirements: 

  • satisfactory completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, or Physics (or the equivalent)
  • provisional certification in Secondary Science
  • three supporting letters of recommendation.

Option 2: Master of Arts Degree in Science Education, Initial Certification

This degree is intended for individuals with a background in science but without any certification or Masters degree.

Entrance requirements: 

  • satisfactory completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, or Physics (or the equivalent)
  • three supporting letters of recommendation.

Option 2B: Master of Arts Degree in Science Education, Initial Certification: Transitional B Option

This degree is intended for individuals with a background in science but without any certification or Masters degree and want to be certified in the classroom as soon as possible. Candidates must be part of existing Transitional B programs such as New York City Teaching Fellows.

Option 3: Initial Certification

This degree is primarily intended for individuals with a background in science interested in provisional certification but not a Masters degree.

Entrance requirements: 

  • satisfactory completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, or Physics (or the equivalent)
  • satisfactory completion of a Masters Degree in Science or Science Education
  • three supporting letters of recommendation.
