City College Fellow
Born in the Dominican Republic, Laura Hernandez moved to New York City at the age of six to live with her mother and sister. Among her many different childhood interests, the one constant was her fascination with how the human mind works; however, her path to a psychology major was anything but direct. During high school, she participated in a culinary arts program that ran the "The Blue Knight Café," where she was promoted to pastry chef. But after two internships with a company called C-Cap, which prepared high school students for careers in the hospitality field, she decided to look elsewhere. At City Tech in downtown Brooklyn, she spent a few semesters studying graphic arts until she finally discovered her passion in an Intro to Psychology class. In spring 2012, she transferred to CCNY in order to gain the training she needs to pursue a PhD in Clinical Psychology, focusing on mental illness prevention.
