Latin American & Caribbean Studies: Internet Resources


CASBAH: Caribbean Studies, Black and Asian History -- Project to identify and map national research resources for Caribbean Studies and the history of Black and Asian people in Britain; descriptions and progress reports on project activities, events, and related links; database of archival, printed, and audiovisual sources and collections.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage -- The Gale (publishing) Group observes Hispanic heritage with a collection of activities and resources, including biographies, a culture quiz and a timeline of events in Hispanic American history. Also features descriptions of Hispanic music genres such as salsa, tango, and Latin pop.

Centre for Latin American Research and Documentation (CEDLA) -- Interuniversity center founded in 1964 at the University of Amsterdam; conducts social science research focusing on the processes of change in Latin America, in six disciplines: cultural anthropology, economics, history, political science, human geography, and sociology; events notices, journal by subscription, and abstracts of publications and selected full-text articles; site versions in English and Spanish; some features in Dutch.

Dominican Studies Institute (CUNY) -- The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute is an interdisciplinary research unit of the City University of New York at City College devoted to the production, gathering, and dissemination of knowledge on Dominicans in the United States, the Dominican Republic, and elsewhere. Officially accredited by the Board of Trustees as an organized research unit of the University on February 22, 1994, the Institute sponsors research projects covering areas which include, but are not limited to education, migration, language, literature, history, economics, women's issues, politics, youth, cultural identity, sports, performing arts, and visual arts.

Online searchable access to this authoritative database of annual annotated bibliographies covering many subjects in the humanities and social sciences. The database can be accessed in English or Spanish and covers 1935 to date.

Latin American and Caribbean Population Information Network (Alternative Title: IPALCA) -- IPALCA is an informal network of Latin American and Caribbean institutions which produce population information and make them available on the internet. IPALCA is associated with the United Nations Population Information Network(POPIN).The IPALCA website which is hosted by CELADE the Latin American and Caribbean Demographic Centre provides information about becoming a member plus a short history,plus links to the sites of network members and also provides details of a discusssion list relating to issues about the construction and maintenance of population websites.

Latin America Research Group -- The Web site of the Latin America Research Group (LARG) at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, USA. LARG studies economic, financial, and political developments in Latin America and the Caribbean. The site provides information on LARG's research and other activities, Web links, and publications in HTML format.

Latin Americanist Research Resources Project -- The Latin Americanist Research Resources Project (LARRP) is an initiative of the Global Resources Program of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Its principal goal is to expand access to Latin American research resources by promoting a distributed model of library cooperation, enhanced electronic access, and effective document delivery. Its three major components are: (1) Latin American Periodicals Tables of Contents (LAPTOC) -- A searchable Web database that provides access to the tables of contents of more than 800 journals, primarily in the humanities and social sciences, published in Latin America. (2) Latin American Open Archives Portal -- Provides access to social sciences grey literature produced in Latin America by research institutes, non-governmental organizations, and peripheral agencies. (3) Presidential Messages -- Contains digital images of presidential speeches since the early 19th century from Mexico and Argentina (over 75,000 pages of speeches).

Latino American History: A Guide to Resources and Research on the Web -- "The University of Colorado Springs' Department of History has organized its site by general resources, archives, Hispanic women's history, political movements, popular culture, religion, and a chronological arrangement of sources."

Latino Ethnic Attitude Survey -- Conducted by Daniel L. Roy, Department of Geography, University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas 66045. These are summary findings of the Latino Ethnic Attitude Survey (LEAS) requested by many survey respondents. The 182 page report, titled "Strangers in a Native Land: A Labyrinthine Map of Latino Identity," dealt specifically with middle-class Latinos of all national origins in the United States. Attention was focused on five related sets of issues. The first set deals with how middle-class Latinos identify themselves, including any contextual differences (self-identity). The second set includes whether their identity or ethnicity is an issue at work, in their community, or in the larger society (a sense of place). The third set considers their language preference. The fourth set looks at how generational differences affect middle-class identity; and finally, the fifth set includes normal geodemographic information related to gender, education, income levels, and zip code.

Puerto Rico at the Dawn of the Modern Age (The Library of Congress) -- Portrays the early history of the commonwealth of Puerto Rico through first-person accounts, political writings, and histories drawn from the Library of Congress's General Collections.

(Suriname) History of Archaeological Research in Suriname, by Aad H. Versteeg -- "The beginning of the history of archaeological investigations in Suriname dates from approx. 125 years ago. The research focused on the Indian populations that lived in the country before the discovery of America by Columbus. It comes as no surprise that archaeological investigations in Suriname have always been closely inter-woven with ethnographical and anthropological studies on the one hand, and with landscape and geological studies on the other." Academic Search Premier -- A major multidisciplinary database that includes fulltext jounral articles. A subject search on "political science," in early 2002, yield 10,000 citations.

Ethnic NewsWatch..."A full-text general reference database of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press -- English and Spanish language."

Historical Abstracts -- An indexing/abstracting service that provides coverage of periodical articles, books, and dissertations dealing with world history from 1450 to the present (excluding the United States and Canada).

Humanities Abstracts -- Humanities Abstracts is a bibliographic database that cites articles from English-language periodicals. Periodical coverage includes some of the best-known scholarly journals and numerous lesser-known but important specialized magazines.
