ABOUT

Lumières

The French Language and Cultural Center at CCNY,
Founded in the Spring 2002, with a generous grant from
The Florence Gould Foundation.

Lumières is an on and off-campus center focusing on Arts and Literature, opened to anyone interested in French and Francophone cultures. Its aim is to foster a sense of community among people whose native language is French and to create opportunities for others to practice their French!

The center welcomes individuals to participate into the weekly scheduled “forum de discussions” following activities such as reading magazines, newspapers, listening to French radio programs, watching videos, TV 5 or learning French songs. It also encourages anyone to send reviews, original poetry and visuals for our new on-line French newsletter : “La Gazette-Filage d’Idées”.

Lumières offers different Ateliers, weekly Workshops in acting, multi-media, music, and week-end Language seminars “Parler au quotidien”, geared as preparation for traveling to French speaking countries.

Lumières creates new works and produces French & Francophone cultural events open to the entire community. It features speakers, guest artists, poetry readings, concerts, short film/video festival, musical and theatrical performances.

The success of Lumières is largely due to the vision and dedication of its Director, Nelly D. Saint-Maurice, and the endorsement and support of The City College Department of Foreign Languages, Division of Humanities:

Fred Reynolds, Dean of the Humanities,
Professor Richard Calichman, Chairperson,

Mary Ruth Strzeszewski, Deputy Chair,

Professor Eve Sourian,
Raquel Chang Rodriguez, Distinguished Professor,
Phyllis Wentworth, Rosa Martinez.

Juan Mercado, Dean @ CWE
