Admissions

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS NOW APRIL 1st

AREAS OF CONCENTRATION
The MFA program admits an average of 20-25 students for each fall semester. Students may apply in one of the following areas of concentration: Writing and Directing Fiction, Writing and Directing Documentary, Camera/Lighting, Editing, or Producing/Production Managing.

PRODUCTIONS
Writer/Directors will direct thesis projects in the second year that they write during the first two semesters in the program. Students in other concentrations, such as Ca
mera/Lighting, Editing, Producing/Production Manging work on a number of thesis productions in their area of specialization. Students in non-directing specializations have the opportunity to make their own film projects in conjunction with several workshop classes offered in the programs.

PRE-REQUISITES
The application process is highly competitive and the program attracts a diverse student population from New York, other regions of the United States, and foreign countries as well. Applicants to the MFA Program in Media Arts Production must have a BA or BFA degree with a minimum 3.0 (B) grade point average in the major. Undergraduate training in film and video should include courses in the following subjects or the equivalent: film history and theory; screenwriting; advanced film and video production (including "hands on" courses in 16mm camera, lighting and sound), film editing, digital editing, directing for fiction film and video; and documentary production. Candidates who lack some of the prerequisite courses, but who show promise based on their portfolio materials (See Creative Portfolio) may be required to take specific undergraduate courses to make up for deficiencies. If a student does not have 16mm film experience at the college-level, he/she is strongly advised to enroll in a hands-on workshop before the beginning of their first semester in the MFA program. Such workshops are given through colleges and media arts organizations around the country, and will count as pre-requisite "experience"as opposed to "transfer credits"-- our program does not accept transfer credits for courses taken at other colleges, universities or institutions.
