MIT’s DR. ERICH P. IPPEN TO DELIVER CUNY-CAT DISTINGUISHED LECTURE MAY 8, 2006 AT CCNY

NEW YORK, April 24, 2006 – Dr. Erich P. Ippen, Elihu Thomson Professor of Electrical Engineering and Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will deliver the next lecture in the CUNY CAT Advances in Photonics Distinguished Lecturer Series, 2 p.m. Monday, May 8, in the Main Lecture Room of Steinman Hall on The City College of New York campus.  His topic will be “Femtosecond Optics: More Than Just Really Fast!” 

Professor Ippen is a principal investigator in MIT’s Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE) and one of the leaders of the laboratory’s Optics and Quantum Electronics Group.  His presentation will focus on recent advances in ultrafast optics that are creating dramatic new capabilities for a variety of applications including optical clocks, medical imaging, micro-machining and communications.  It will provide a brief description of the femtosecond laser state-of-the-art that makes all of these things possible and will illustrate how it enables such a wide range of uses. 

Professor Ippen received the S.B. in Electrical Engineering from MIT in 1962, and then attended the University of California, Berkeley where he received his M.S. in 1965 and Ph.D. in 1968 in electrical engineering. He was a member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories from 1968 to 1980 where he was one of the founders of the field of femtosecond optics. He joined the MIT faculty in 1980.

Dr. Ippen is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His many honors include MIT’s 2001-2002 James R. Killian, Jr. Faculty Achievement Award in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to his fields and to the Institute.

The Advances in Photonics Distinguished Lecturer Series is organized by the CUNY New York State Center for Advanced Technology in Photonics Applications (CUNY CAT) in conjunction with the Photonics Initiative, a flagship emphasis program designated in the CUNY 2004-2008 Master Plan.  Support for the series has been provided by Corning Inc., Hamamatsu Corp., Lockheed Martin, Mediscience Technology Corp., Northrop Grumman, and the U.S. Navy Program Management Office for Shipboard Systems.

The Distinguished Lecturer Series, which will continue through 2006 and 2007, showcases the latest advances in all aspects of photonics research through lectures by world leaders in the field.  It is aimed at CUNY faculty, staff and students, along with regional academic, industrial and government scientists, and is intended to serve as a catalyst for further research and development in this cutting edge discipline of the 21st Century. 

Steinman Hall, home of the Grove School of Engineering at The City College of New York, is located at 140th Street and Convent Avenue, Manhattan.
