AARON DAVIS HALL TO HOST CUNY JAZZ FESTIVAL, MAY 11-12

Guest Artist Dave Liebman to Perform With Student Musicians

NEW YORK, May 1, 2006 – Musical groups representing five CUNY senior colleges, New York City’s best public high school musicians and Japan’s Shobi University will join with guest artist Dave Liebman for the 7th Annual CUNY Jazz Festival, May 11 – 12 at Aaron Davis Hall on The City College of New York campus.

The two-day event features performances by big bands and combos from The City College of New York (CCNY), College of Staten Island, Hunter College, Queens College and York College, as well as the All-City High School Jazz Ensemble and from Japan, Shobi University.  The program, which runs 11 a.m. – 10:30 p.m. Thursday, May 11 and 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. Friday, May 12, is free and open to the public.

“A new generation of musicians is exploring jazz on campuses across the CUNY system,” said the Festival’s organizer, Mike Holober, Assistant Professor of Music at CCNY.  “The festival is a wonderful opportunity for them to get together and learn from the eclectic mix of styles these student-musicians play.”

He notes that at CCNY, where he teaches in the jazz performance major, half of his students are international students.  “They come to work with a stellar faculty as well as the affordable tuition and jazz influences that New York offers.”

The guest artist, saxophonist Dave Liebman, is a founder of the International Association of Schools of Jazz.  A Brooklyn native, he has been a fixture on the New York jazz scene since the early 1970s.  Before forming his own group in 1978, he toured with Miles Davis and Chick Corea.  Since 1973, he has consistently placed among the top finalists in the Downbeat magazine critics poll’s soprano saxophone category.

The CUNY Jazz Festival is made possible by funding from the Simon H. Rifkind Center for the Humanities and Arts at CCNY in cooperation with Jazz at Lincoln Center.
