HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL DEAN JEFFREY S. FLIER, M.D., ’68, TO DELIVER SPRING 2008 RUDIN LECTURE AT CCNY MAY 13

NEW YORK, April 29, 2008 –Jeffrey S. Flier, M.D., ’68, Dean of Harvard Medical School, will deliver the Spring 2008 Samuel Rudin Distinguished Visiting Scholar Lecture 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, in The Great Hall of Shepard Hall at The City College of New York (CCNY). Dr. Flier’s topic will be “Obesity 2008: Molecular Science Confronts an Expanding Epidemic.” The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Flier was named the 21st Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard in July 2007, having previously served as Dean for Academic Programs and Chief Academic Officer for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard teaching affiliate. An endocrinologist and authority on the molecular causes of obesity, he is also Caroline Shields Walker Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

A New York City native, he received a B.S., from CCNY in 1968 and his M.D. from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1972. After his residency at Mount Sinai, he became a clinical associate at the National Institutes of Health in 1974 and joined the Harvard faculty in 1978. He served as chief of Beth Israel Hospital’s diabetes unit until 1990, when he was named chief of the endocrine division.

One of the United States’ leading investigators in obesity and diabetes, his research has produced major insights into the molecular mechanism of insulin action, the molecular mechanisms of insulin resistance in human disease and the molecular pathophysiology of obesity.

Dr. Flier is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2005, he received the Banting Medal from the American Diabetes Association, its highest honor. His other honors include the Eli Lilly Award from the American Diabetes Association, the Berson Lecture of the American Physiological Society and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Athens.

About The Rudin Lecture Program

The Samuel Rudin Distinguished Visiting Scholars Program, named for Samuel Rudin, the civic and philanthropic leader who graduated from CCNY in 1918, was initiated in 1996. Supported by a grant from The May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, Inc., it provides an opportunity for members of the City College community to interact with outstanding scholars, civic and business leaders, thereby enriching the educational experience on campus. The program is also intended to foster communication in the academic community of New York City.

Previous Rudin Scholars have included: Nobel Prize winner and cancer researcher Dr. Harold E. Varmus; veteran journalist Walter Cronkite; former Congresswoman Patricia S. Schroeder; Abraham H. Foxman, National Director, the Anti-Defamation League; author Walter Mosley (CCNY ‘91MA); journalist Tom Brokaw; authors Arthur and Barbara Gelb; film maker Ric Burns and the creator and executive producer of the PBS series “American Masters,” Susan Lacy.
