MEDITERRANEAN PHOTO EXHIBIT DEBUTS SEPTEMBER 5 AT THE CCNY CENTER FOR WORKER EDUCATION

New Digital Exhibition Features the Historic Jewel City of Mallorca, One of Spain’s Most Exhilarating and Popular Destinations

NEW YORK, August 25, 2008 – “Palma Digit Art,” 35-enhanced images of the historic and magical capital of the Spanish island of Mallorca, debuts September 5 at The City College of New York (CCNY) Center for Worker Education (CWE) as part of its Hispanic Heritage Month festivities. The exhibit will be on display at the Center’s Lower Manhattan campus at 25 Broadway, 7th floor, through October 31.  Viewing hours are 11 a.m. -7 p.m., Monday- Friday.  Admission is free and open to the public.

Juan Carlos Mercado, Acting Dean of the CCNY Division of Worker Education, the Mallorcan artist José Luis Gil Miró and invited guests will inaugurate the exhibit with a reception 5:30 p.m September 5 that will feature a Mallorcan food tasting.

“Palma Digit Art” was created by Miró, whose work expresses feelings of admiration and love towards his city and his commitment to combining vanguard digital tools with traditional photography. This exhibit is sponsored by the Ministries of Education, Trade, Industry and Energy of the Balearics Islands Government, the Balearic Studies Institute and the American boutique hotel group Scott’s Hotels group, which owns two famous small hotels on Mallorca.

Gil Miró invites viewers to “look at the city of Palma with open eyes, to look at its hidden and surprising corners which go unnoticed on a daily basis, secret spaces that have witnessed many encounters, romantic interludes and historic moments.”

The exhibition was created from digital photographs complemented with creative touches, highlighting “history and romanticism, magical places filled with poetry that invite viewers to stop the world around them to enjoy the simple pleasure of observing some of the marvellous and peculiar things that surround us.”

“José Luis Gil Miró uses his city’s rich historic background, dating from the 13th Century, as a source of inspiration to express admiration for the resilience, temperament and disciplined will that became the guiding light of Mallorcan-born Junípero Serra, whose footsteps are a landmark in U.S. History, founding a dozen major California cities from San Diego to San Francisco,” said CWE Dean Mercado.

“We are proud that the cultural trust of Mallorca can serve to highlight the contributions made by a history maker and visionary like Junípero Serra, rightly celebrated through the Hispanic Heritage Month”, said Pere Joan Martorell, Director General of Culture of the Balearic Government’s Ministry of Education.
