Part of The AIDS Memorial Quilt at CCNY in 2011. It returns next month as part of City College's World AIDS Day observance.

Exhibits represent largest display of quilt on U.S. college campus

The AIDS Memorial Quilt returns to The City College of New York next month to highlight CCNY's observance of World AIDS Day. The quilt will be on display December 2 – 4 at the Center for Worker Education (CWE), 7th Floor, 25 Broadway, and December 5 – 6 in the Great Hall of Shepard Hall on City College's main campus at 160 Convent Avenue.

The two showings combined represent the largest collegiate display of the quilt in the United States, according to Brian Holman, NAMES Project national display coordinator. "We are eager to share the Memorial Quilt with the greater New York City Community, for it is unlike any memorial ever created," he added. The Atlanta-based NAMES Project Foundation is the custodian of the quilt.

The display in The Great Hall will have 480 panels. At CWE, 120 panels will be on display. In all, 48,000 three-by-six-foot memorial panels comprise the quilt.

Viewing hours at the Center for Worker Education are 8 p.m. – 9 p.m. Monday, December 2, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, and 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 4. Great Hall viewing hours are 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Thursday, December 5, and Friday, December 6.

In addition to displaying the AIDS Memorial Quilt, City College has scheduled five workshops, discussions and lectures about the quilt and the global HIV/AIDS pandemic. The events, which are open to the public, lead up World AIDS Day, December 1, and the quilt display.

Wednesday, November 20, "HIV/AIDS in the Global Perspective," 6 – 8 p.m., Room 1/202, NAC.
