  • STEM Institute kicks off CCNY summer HS programs

    One hundred and sixty students from 50 high schools across the five boroughs will attend the 2015 New York STEM Institute summer program June 29 – August 7 at the City College of New York. The goal of the Institute is to prepare high school students, particularly women and underrepresented minorities, to successfully pursue college majors in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

    The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture has made the top ten in the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanics, according to the most recent rankings issued by Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine.

  • Rebecca Solnit to Present Mumford Lecture at CCNY, April 2

    Rebecca Solnit, the distinguished writer, historian, activist and urbanist, will be the guest speaker at this year’s Lewis Mumford Lecture on Urbanism at The City College of New York, Thursday, April 2, at 6:30 p.m. Her talk, in CCNY’s Great Hall in Shepard Hall, will be entitled “Atlases against Empire: A Woman Measures the City."

  • Spitzer Dean George Ranalli Earns top AIA Honor

    The American Institute of Architects’ Jury of Fellows has elevated George Ranalli, dean of The City College of New York’s Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, to its College of Fellows. Dean Ranalli and other 2015 fellows will be honored at an investiture ceremony at the AIA Convention in Atlanta, Ga., May 15.

  • “Solar Roofpod” Returns Atop Spitzer School

    City College’s student-designed “Solar Roofpod” is making a comeback atop the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture building. Envisaged as a solution to New York City’s energy and emission problems, the innovative structure had been in storage since placing second in the “People’s Choice Award” at the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2011 Solar Decathlon on the National Mall.

    In a once-in-a-lifetime exhibit on American soil, Antoni Gaudi’s famous “La Sagrada Familia” goes on display September 29 through May 8, 2015 at The City College of New York’s Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture. Entitled “Sagrada Família - Gaudí's Unfinished Masterpiece: Geometry, Construction and Site,” it is sponsored by Santander Bank.

  • Lance Brown’s Urban Design Book Revised, Re-Released

    Wiley has released the second edition of “Urban Design for an Urban Century,” co-authored by Lance Jay Brown, ACSA Distinguished Professor Of Architecture in City College’s Spitzer School of Architecture. The book, co-written with David Dixon FAIA, offers a comprehensive introduction to urban design and an analysis of the forces that shaped it from the dawn of city building to today. It also examines contemporary theory, core principles and strategies for moving forward.

  • Latif Jiji Receives CCNY President’s Award for Excellence

    Dr. Latif M. Jiji, Herbert Kayser Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the Grove School of Engineering, received The City College of New York’s President’s Award for Excellence Tuesday, May 13, for his half century of work at CCNY. Professor Jiji was among the honorees at CCNY’s 2014 faculty recognition ceremony in The Great Hall, Shepard Hall on the college campus.

  • Five Student Teams Win $8,000 in Spitzer School Brick Design Contest

    The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at The City College of New York today announced the winners of $8,000 in prizes in a competition intended to help students learn how to design with brick. Dean George Ranalli and Professor Christian Volkmann, coordinator of the third-year undergraduate studio, presented the awards at a ceremony in the school’s Sciame Auditorium.

  • J. Max Bond Center Hosts Public Interest Design Institute

    Nearly 100 architects, landscape architects and community development professionals from several states attended a two-day Public Interest Design Institute held March 24 – 25 at City College’s Spitzer School of Architecture. The J. Max Bond Center on Design for the Just City, Design Corps and the SEED Network (Social, Economic, Environmental Design) organized the event, the first of its kind held at CCNY.

  • Spitzer School Students Design Residence for Peruvian Hospital

    Visiting volunteers working at a hospital in rural Peru will soon have an environmentally friendly residence to stay at thanks, in part to the efforts of two graduate students in City College’s Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture. The Yantaló Volunteer House, which is affiliated with the Yantaló Peru Foundation, is expected to open later this year.

    Theaster Gates, an artist and innovator in the field of social practice, will present the 10th Annual Lewis Mumford Lecture at The City College of New York, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, in the Great Hall, Shepard Hall on the CCNY campus.   • Spitzer School Exhibits George Post Drawings for CCNY Campus

    “Building the Modern Gothic: George Post at City College,” an exhibit of digital reproductions of 45 original drawings by Mr. Post for his design of The City College of New York campus, will be on display February 3 through May 9 in the Atrium Gallery of City College’s Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture.   • Book Showcases Practice of Spitzer School Dean George Ranalli

    In his private practice, George Ranalli, dean of City College’s Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, has designed for a rock star as well as some of New York City’s poorest residents. His body of work, which spans more than 30 years, is the subject of “In Situ,” a 450-page book published by Oscar Riera Ojeda Publishers to be released December 16.

  • Creating a More Flood-Resistant Jamaica Bay

    The City College of New York is one of four colleges and universities awarded grants from the Rockefeller Foundation to develop design strategies to improve resiliency in coastal zones subject to flooding such as that caused by Hurricane Sandy. The CCNY project will focus on developing proposals for Jamaica Bay, a 31-square mile estuarine embayment located in Brooklyn and Queens.

  • CCNY to Install Solar Roofpod Atop Spitzer School of Architecture

    A campaign is underway to install the Solar Roofpod atop the Spitzer School of Architecture building, where it will serve as a multi-purpose facility dedicated to sustainability. The installation is expected to begin in early 2014. The solar-powered house was The City College of New York entry in the U.S. Department of Energy 2011 Solar Decathlon.
