  • Richard Sennett to Deliver 7th Mumford Lecture April 11

    Dr. Richard Sennett, author and professor of sociology at the London School of Economics and New York University, will deliver the seventh Lewis Mumford Lecture on Urbanism 6 p.m. Monday, April 11, at The City College of New York.  His topic will be “The Edge: Borders and Boundaries in the City.”  The lecture, held in The Great Hall of Shepard Hall, located at 160 Convent Ave., New York, is free and open to the public.

  • Marta Gutman Envisions Child-Friendly Urban Neighborhoods

    New York is experiencing a new baby boom.  Between 2000 and 2007, the number of children under age five just in Manhattan grew by 32 percent, according to The New York Times.  In this densely populated city, with its costly real estate, finding space for kids to be kids can prove daunting.

    “Research & Design: Faculty Work, The City College of New York - Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture,” by George Ranalli, (Oscar Riera Ojeda Publications, 2010), the catalog accompanying the school’s opening exhibit, was chosen one of the ten best architecture books for 2010 by ArchNewsNow, an architecture online newsletter.

  • Dean Ranalli to Receive Sidney L. Strauss Award

    George Ranalli, under whose tenure as dean the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at The City College of New York has been transformed into a first-tier design school, will be awarded the Sidney L. Strauss Award from the New York Society of Architects.  Dean Ranalli, who has led the school since 1999, will be recognized for outstanding achievements within the architectural profession at the society’s annual awards dinner, November 18.

  • Spitzer School Team Wins in ‘Build a Better Burb’ Competition

    Replacing the asphalt pavement in parking lots with permeable grass-pavers that can withstand car traffic and sustain biomass would not only improve their aesthetics but help fight global warming.  That idea was one of the elements of a winning proposal submitted by a team of landscape architects from the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at The City College of New York in the Long Island Index’ “Build a Better Burb” competition.

  • Two CCNY Students Honored in Name of Clinton Climate Initiative

    Two fourth-year students in the Spitzer School of Architecture at The City College of New York (CCNY) will receive scholarships in the name of the Clinton Climate Initiative for their team leadership efforts in CCNY’s entry in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon 2011.  Farah Ahmad and Samuel Mikhail, natives of Staten Island now living in Manhattan, will be recognized October 7 at the Heritage Ball, a benefit held by the American Institute of Architects’ New York (AIA NY) chapter and the Center for Architecture Foundation.

    “New York, New York: Place, Culture and Urbanity” will be the theme for the Fall 2010 Sciame Lecture Series at the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at The City College of New York (CCNY).  The eight-part series, which is free and open to the public, presents authors and prominent architects discussing some of New York’s most iconic buildings and public works, including the Empire State Building, Pennsylvania Station and Rockefeller Center.

  • Helen Levin, BArch ’10, Receives AIA Fontainebleau Prize

    Helen Levin, a graduating fifth-year architecture student in the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at The City College of New York (CCNY), has been awarded the AIA Fontainebleau Prize.  The prize provides a full scholarship to the summer program for architects at the Fontainebleau Schools held in Chateau Fontainebleau, south of Paris.  A second graduating fifth-year architecture student at CCNY, Shengyi Pu, won a partial scholarship to attend Fontainebleau.
