Creative Writing Class Inspires Student to Blog on Autism
When Lisa Quinones went to City College’s commencement exercises last month, she had to “fight back tears” when her dean talked about overcoming hardships and obstacles. Ms. Quinones, a legal secretary from the Bronx, had just spent the last five years working toward her MFA degree in creative writing while dealing with the challenges of raising a child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

CCNY English Professor Awarded Fulbright to Italy
Dr. Carla Cappetti, a professor of English at The City College of New York whose specialty is American literature and literary theory, has been awarded a 2013-2014 Fulbright Scholar Award for teaching and research in Italy.

Poetry Outreach Conference for Teachers Slated for June 8
The First Annual Poetry Outreach Conference, sponsored by The City College of New York School of Education and CCNY’s Poetry Outreach Center, will be held 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 8, in the City College Faculty Dining Room, third floor, North Academic Center, on the CCNY campus. Award-winning author Jacqueline Woodson will be the keynote speaker.

CCNY Summer Programs Inspire City HS Students
Two summers ago, Philomina Kane, 16, and the daughter of Ghanaian immigrants, was one of seven participants in The City College of New York’s annual IUSL Photonics Training Program. The program offers high school students an opportunity for applied research in photonic science and technology. This fall, Ms. Kane enters Princeton University grateful to her CCNY experience for setting her on a path that she hopes will lead to a career in biomedical engineering.

CCNY Professor’s Film On Hans Richter To Premiere May 5 In LA
“HANS RICHTER: Everything Turns – Everything Revolves,” a documentary by City College of New York Professor of Film Dave Davidson about the pioneering filmmaker, will have its premiere 1 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles. Richter, who was a major force in redefining art and film in the 20th century, was also director of CCNY’s Institute of Film Techniques – the first documentary film school in the United States – from 1941 to 1957.

Trumpet Great Tim Hagans at CUNY Jazz Festival May 2-3
The 13th Annual CUNY Jazz Festival, a gathering of bands and ensembles from across the CUNY system, takes place May 2-3 in Aaron Davis Hall, Theatre B, at The City College of New York, 135th Street and Convent Avenue, Manhattan. Trumpet player Tim Hagans, hailed by “The New York Times” as “a firecracker of a trumpeter,” will be the festival’s guest artist.

CCNY Historian Judith Stein Awarded CUNY Distinguished Fellowship
City College of New York historian Dr. Judith Stein is doubly distinguished. Professor Stein, who earlier this year became a CUNY Distinguished Professor, has been awarded a CUNY Distinguished Fellowship for the spring 2014 semester from the Advanced Research Collaborative (ARC) of the Graduate Center (GC) of the City University of New York. She one of 15 “exceptional national and international scholars” selected for the inaugural cohort of this GC initiative.

CCNY Graduating Theatre Students Present Senior Showcase May 6
For the first time ever, graduating seniors in The City College of New York’s Department of Theatre and Speech will present a showcase evening of scenes, songs and monologues to the New York entertainment industry.
