CWE Lecturer Wins Cartagena Film Festival Award

A short film by Carlos Aguasaco, a Spanish lecturer in The City College of New York’s (CCNY) Division of Interdisciplinary Studies, has won for best video in the art category at the Cartagena (Colombia) International Film Festival. Mr. Aguasaco, who is also an alumnus of CCNY, wrote, produced and directed “Medialengua” (“Half Tongue”), a short story about a word in Spanish being confused with an English word.

CCNY Professor’s Musical Journey Down the Hudson
to Debut April 10

In addition to teaching in the Music Department at The City College of New York (CCNY), noted jazz composer and pianist Mike Holober serves as artistic director and conductor of the Westchester Jazz Orchestra (WJO). On Saturday, April 10, he will lead the ensemble in the premiere of his composition “Flow: In Celebration of the Hudson River.”

CCNY’s 38th Annual Spring Poetry Festival to Take Place May 14

The 38th Annual City College Poetry Festival will take place 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 14, in Theater B of Aaron Davis Hall at W. 135th Street and Convent Avenue on The City College campus. Dubbed “the Woodstock of the Spoken Word,” the festival is an all-day, all-verse event that has become New York’s longest-running, most established and democratic poetry celebration.

Professor Ina Saltz’ ‘Body Type’ Sequel Released

CCNY-Led Team Wins One Club Creative Boot Camp Competition

A creative group of students from The City College of New York (CCNY) and Brooklyn College teamed to win The One Club’s “Creative Boot Camp” competition in January. The team, Nadine Charles, Sherifa Gayle, and Ricardo Paredes from CCNY, and Chanie Kaminker from Brooklyn College, worked on an advertising campaign for a new laptop developed by Hewlett Packard. They will attend The One Show in May in New York City in honor of their win.

CCNY’S Center For Worker Education Hosts Two Day Conference On Hip-Hop

“Is Hip-Hop History?,” a two-day conference to examine the current state of the music genre and subculture and its future outlook, will be held February 19 – 20 at The City College of New York (CCNY) Center for Worker Education (CWE). Approximately 200 persons, including hip-hop scholars, performers, entrepreneurs, journalists and activists, are expected to participate in the event, which will address such issues as the over-commercialization of hip-hop, hip-hop media going digital and hip-hop activism.

CCNY Jazz Maestro John Patitucci Nominated For 4th Grammy

CCNY Professor of Music John Patitucci, a three-time Grammy winner, received a 2009 nomination in the Best Jazz Instrumental Album category for his 13th album, “Remembrance.” The winners will be announced at the 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards, January 31, 2010, in Los Angeles.

Teens' Mural Brings Pride Beauty to Harlem Neighborhood

Over a seven-week period last summer, a small group of local teens transformed a nondescript Chinese food takeout shop in Central Harlem into a source of pride and beauty for their community. The effort, which resulted in an 8’ x 15’ mural with Chinese motifs painted on the storefront, was a pilot project for the Harlem Youth Project, a City College of New York (CCNY) initiative supported by UNICEF to create a child and youth-friendly neighborhood.
