CCNY Sophomore Named U.S. Interior Dept. Student Ambassador
For ten weeks last summer, Ivan Estevez, a sophomore majoring in civil engineering at The City College of New York, interned at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) near San Francisco. His assignment was to study 3D scans of the geological damage done by the devastating Japan earthquake in the spring and to help create figures for the USGS’ report on the calamity.

Stanford University Teams Up with The City University of New York and City College in New Engineering and Science Collaboration in NYC
In response to Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s call to strengthen New York City’s economy by creating a world-class applied science and engineering school here, Stanford University President John L. Hennessy, The City University of New York Chancellor Matthew Goldstein and City College President Lisa S. Coico today announced the creation of the Stanford-CUNY Collaboration at City College, or Stanford@CCNY.

NOAA-CREST Begins Second Decade with $15 Million Grant

CCNY-led Research Could Lead to Wearable Sensors for the Blind
Wearable sensors that allow blind people to “see” with their hands, bodies or faces could be on the horizon, thanks to a $2 million award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to researchers at The City College of New York and Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech).

NRC Ranks CCNY PhD Program Among Best in US
In 1999, the City University of New York began training PhD candidates in biomedical engineering, three years before its engineering school, the Grove School at The City College of New York, even had a biomedical engineering department. Fast-forward 12 years to 2011 and the program is now one of the nation’s best, according to National Research Council (NRC) rankings.

CCNY’s Solar Roof Pod Showcases Innovative Technology
A unique structure in the urban landscape has arisen on a plaza of The City College of New York campus over the past few months. Designed and built by CCNY students, faculty and team sponsors, it is meant to be installed on the roofs of commercial and residential buildings in high-density urban centers. Dubbed the Solar Roof Pod, it showcases cutting-edge green technology inside and out, including a novel heating and cooling system with more than twice the energy efficiency of conventional units.

Solar Roof Pod Volunteers Learn Skills Not Taught in Class
Yinery Baez, a fourth-year architecture student in the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at The City College of New York, never gave much thought to screws. However, as project manager for the interior of the Solar Roof Pod, CCNY’s entry in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon, specifying cabinet hardware is one of her many responsibilities.

CCNY Sustainability Program Receives Green Infrastructure Grant
A joint proposal from The City College of New York’s interdisciplinary Sustainability in the Urban Environment master’s program and two other organizations was one of 15 projects funded in the New York Department of Environmental Protection’s 2011 Green Infrastructure Grant Program. The team, which also includes New York Restoration Project, as lead partner, and Stantec Consulting, received $244,920.

CCNY-Led Team Gets $3M for Northeast Earth System Model
An interdisciplinary team of researchers led by Dr. Charles Vörösmarty, professor of civil engineering in the Grove School of Engineering at The City College of New York, was awarded $3 million from the National Science Foundation to develop a regional earth system model of the Northeast. The effort involves partner institutions from around the region, including Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Mass.
