  • CCNY Robotics Professor Receives NSF Commercialization Grant

    Dr. Jizhong Xiao, assistant professor of electrical engineering in CCNY’s Grove School of Engineering was awarded a six-month, $50,000 commercialization grant from the National Science Foundation Innovation Corps (I-Corps) program. Professor Xiao will use the award to assess the commercial readiness of the City-Climber, a mobile robot capable of climbing walls and running along ceilings.

  • Mitchell B. Schaffler Named CUNY Distinguished Professor

    Dr. Mitchell B. Schaffler, Wallace H. Coulter and Presidential Professor of Biomedical Engineering in CCNY’s Grove School of Engineering and Director of the New York Center for Biomedical Engineering, has been named a CUNY Distinguished Professor. The CUNY Board of Trustees approved the appointment at its February 27 meeting.

  • Five Teams Picked as Kaylie Entrepreneurship Prize Finalists

    Five student teams have been chosen as finalists for The City College of New York’s Second Annual Kaylie Prize for Entrepreneurship. Over the next four months, the teams will refine their business ideas as they compete for the first prize: financial support and housing to work over the summer in a Silicon Valley garage-like environment to further develop their projects, plus a $25,000 cash award from entrepreneur and contest benefactor Harvey Kaylie, CCNY Class of 1960.

  • CCNY Sophomore Named U.S. Interior Dept. Student Ambassador

    For ten weeks last summer, Ivan Estevez, a sophomore majoring in civil engineering at The City College of New York, interned at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) near San Francisco. His assignment was to study 3D scans of the geological damage done by the devastating Japan earthquake in the spring and to help create figures for the USGS’ report on the calamity.

    A joint proposal from The City College of New York’s interdisciplinary Sustainability in the Urban Environment master’s program and two other organizations was one of 15 projects funded in the New York Department of Environmental Protection’s 2011 Green Infrastructure Grant Program. The team, which also includes New York Restoration Project, as lead partner, and Stantec Consulting, received $244,920.

  • CCNY-Led Team Gets $3M for Northeast Earth System Model

    An interdisciplinary team of researchers led by Dr. Charles Vörösmarty, professor of civil engineering in the Grove School of Engineering at The City College of New York, was awarded $3 million from the National Science Foundation to develop a regional earth system model of the Northeast. The effort involves partner institutions from around the region, including Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Mass.
