IUSL Holds CUNY Laser Intellectual Property Event April 21
The year 2010 marks the 50th birthday of the laser and 40th year since the discovery of the supercontinuum, a light having both high spatial coherence and broad spectral bandwidth. These anniversaries will be observed at CUNY Laser Intellectual Property Day, an open house event for laser companies and scientists, to be held Wednesday, April 21, by the Institute for Ultrafast Spectroscopy and Lasers (IUSL) at The City College of New York (CCNY).

CCNY’s 38th Annual Spring Poetry Festival to Take Place May 14
The 38th Annual City College Poetry Festival will take place 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 14, in Theater B of Aaron Davis Hall at W. 135th Street and Convent Avenue on The City College campus. Dubbed “the Woodstock of the Spoken Word,” the festival is an all-day, all-verse event that has become New York’s longest-running, most established and democratic poetry celebration.

Breast Cancer Pioneer Delivers Genetics Lecture March 16 at CCNY
Dr. Mary-Claire King, American Cancer Society Professor in the Departments of Genome Sciences and Medicine at the University of Washington, will deliver the annual Louis Levine-Gabriella de Beer Lecture in Genetics at The City College of New York (CCNY), 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, in The Great Hall. Her topic will be “Every Unhappy Family is Unhappy in Its Own Way: Genetic Heterogeneity in Human Disease.” The lecture, which is presented by CCNY Interim President Robert E. Paaswell and The City College Fund, is free and open to the public.

MIT Professor to Deliver Katz Chemical Engineering Lecture March 15
Dr. Arup Chakraborty, Robert T. Haslam Professor of Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, and Biological Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will deliver the Annual Katz Lecture in Chemical Engineering at The City College of New York (CCNY) 2 p.m. Monday, March 15, in the Steinman Hall auditorium. His topic will be “Understanding Adaptive Immunity: A Crossroad of the Physical, Life, and Engineering Sciences.”

Spring Architecture Lectures Explore Green Design, Breaking Boundaries
The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at The City College of New York (CCNY) will present the Sciame Spring Lecture Series – 2010, titled “Crossing Boundaries: Explorations and Expressions.” The series, which presents talks by prominent, award-winning architects, runs eight consecutive Thursdays, February 11 through April 8. Lectures begin at 6 p.m. and are held in the Spitzer School’s Sciame Auditorium.

CCNY’S Center For Worker Education Hosts Two Day Conference On Hip-Hop
“Is Hip-Hop History?,” a two-day conference to examine the current state of the music genre and subculture and its future outlook, will be held February 19 – 20 at The City College of New York (CCNY) Center for Worker Education (CWE). Approximately 200 persons, including hip-hop scholars, performers, entrepreneurs, journalists and activists, are expected to participate in the event, which will address such issues as the over-commercialization of hip-hop, hip-hop media going digital and hip-hop activism.

Powell Center Conference Examines Issues of Inclusion in the Green Economy
While real job openings in the United States have plummeted 50 percent in two years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the sustainability sector offers one of the few bright spots in the job market. Nationally, employment in the sector grew by 9.1 percent in the decade ending in 2007, compared with 3.7 percent overall, according to The Pew Charitable Trust.

CCNY Student Engineers Discuss Water Projects At U.N.
Since 2005, the City College chapter of Engineers Without Borders (CCNY-EWB) has been working to bring fresh water to small villages in rural Honduras. Earlier this month, chapter leaders Svetlana Fisher and Joanna Bonfiglio gave a presentation on their efforts to a panel on water issues held at the United Nations as part of Rotary International Day. Later that day, CCNY-EWB was feted at a fundraiser cocktail party held by Rotaract at the United Nations, a young professionals division of Rotary.

Symposium Marks 400th Anniversary Of Royal Commentaries Of The Incas
Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (Cuzco, 1539 – Córdoba, 1616) was the son of a Spanish conquistador and an Incan princess who would become the first great Spanish-American writer and the first historian of the New World born in the Americas. “The Royal Commentaries,” his history of the Incan Empire and its conquest by Spain, is considered by many scholars to be the most elegant and complete accounting of the rise and fall of this civilization in what is now Peru.
