CCNY-Led Team Develops Non-Toxic Oil Recovery Agent

A team of chemists led by Dr. George John, Associate Professor at The City College of New York (CCNY), have developed a non-toxic, recyclable agent that can solidify oil on salt water so that it can be scooped up like the fat that forms on the top of a pot of chilled chicken soup. The agent could potentially be used to recover oil lost in the British Petroleum (BP) spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Professor John said.

CCNY Art Professor Awarded Guggenheim Fellowship

Hajoe Moderegger, associate professor of electronic design & multimedia in The City College of New York (CCNY) art department, has been named a 2010 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow. He will share the fellowship with his artist wife, Franziska Lamprecht, with whom he collaborates under the name “eteam.”

CUNY DSI Produces Special Edition of Prestigious Journal

At the invitation of the Instituto Franklin of the University of Alcalá, Spain, the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute (CUNY DSI) will produce a special issue of its prestigious journal, “Camino Real,” devoted to multidisciplinary monographs on Dominicans in the United States. CUNY DSI Director Dr. Ramona Hernández and Associate Director Anthony Stevens-Acevedo will edit the edition and conduct a national call for papers.

Professor Alfano Briefs Navy on Ultrafast Light Propagation

Dr. Robert R. Alfano, CUNY Distinguished Professor of Science and Engineering at The City College of New York (CCNY), will address a gathering of U.S. Department of Defense (U.S. Navy) researchers and officials meeting Wednesday, May 26, at Lockheed-Martin offices in Garden City, NY. He will discuss the potential application of his work in ultrafast propagation of light through dielectric media and seeing through scattering and absorption walls to improve underwater navigation systems for the U.S. Navy Trident–class submarine program.

CCNY Professor Brings Conservation Biology to Secondary Schools

As a middle school science teacher at Hunter High School, Yael Wyner wanted to integrate conservation biology, which is typically taught in college, into the environmental science curriculum. One of the drawbacks, she discovered, was that “students learned about ecology and human impact separately and couldn’t connect the two.”

Michael Sorkin Wins American Academy Architecture Award

Michael Sorkin, Distinguished Professor of Architecture and Director of the Graduate Urban Design Program at The City College of New York (CCNY), was chosen as a recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters 2010 Architecture Awards. Professor Sorkin was selected for the award, which carries a $7,500 prize, in recognition of his body of work in architecture, research and criticism.

CCNY to Compete in U.S. Energy Department’s 2011 Solar Decathlon

A team from the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture and the Grove School of Engineering at The City College of New York (CCNY) has been chosen as one of 20 finalists in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon for 2011. As Team New York, the CCNY students will compete against colleges and universities from the United States, Belgium, Canada, China and New Zealand to design, build and operate the most affordable, attractive, effective and energy-efficient solar-powered house.

CWE Lecturer Wins Cartagena Film Festival Award

A short film by Carlos Aguasaco, a Spanish lecturer in The City College of New York’s (CCNY) Division of Interdisciplinary Studies, has won for best video in the art category at the Cartagena (Colombia) International Film Festival. Mr. Aguasaco, who is also an alumnus of CCNY, wrote, produced and directed “Medialengua” (“Half Tongue”), a short story about a word in Spanish being confused with an English word.

CCNY Named to President's Community Service Honor Roll

The City College of New York (CCNY) has been named to the 2009 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This is the highest recognition an institution of higher education can receive from the Federal Government for its commitment to volunteering, community service and civic engagement. CCNY was chosen for its service-learning academic programs as well as for student-led community service projects.

IUSL Holds CUNY Laser Intellectual Property Event April 21

The year 2010 marks the 50th birthday of the laser and 40th year since the discovery of the supercontinuum, a light having both high spatial coherence and broad spectral bandwidth.
