CCNY-Led Team Develops Non-Toxic Oil Recovery Agent
A team of chemists led by Dr. George John, Associate Professor at The City College of New York (CCNY), have developed a non-toxic, recyclable agent that can solidify oil on salt water so that it can be scooped up like the fat that forms on the top of a pot of chilled chicken soup. The agent could potentially be used to recover oil lost in the British Petroleum (BP) spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Professor John said.

Professor Alfano Briefs Navy on Ultrafast Light Propagation
Dr. Robert R. Alfano, CUNY Distinguished Professor of Science and Engineering at The City College of New York (CCNY), will address a gathering of U.S. Department of Defense (U.S. Navy) researchers and officials meeting Wednesday, May 26, at Lockheed-Martin offices in Garden City, NY. He will discuss the potential application of his work in ultrafast propagation of light through dielectric media and seeing through scattering and absorption walls to improve underwater navigation systems for the U.S. Navy Trident–class submarine program.

CCNY Senior Maurice Selby Awarded 2010 Salk Scholarship
Maurice Selby, a senior at The City College of New York (CCNY), has been awarded the 2010 Jonas E. Salk Scholarship to study medicine. He is among eight CUNY students to receive the prestigious scholarship, which was presented in a ceremony May 12 at Baruch College.

CCNY Wins 3 Awards at Vienna Science Conference
Twenty-three undergraduate and graduate students from The City College of New York (CCNY) traveled to Austria April 7 - 9 to participate in the Junior Science Conference 2010 at the Technical University of Vienna. Senior computer engineering major Igor Labutov took first prize in the masters-level poster competition; two other CCNY students also received prizes.

CCNY to Confer Honorary Doctorate on Sy Sternberg, ’65 EE
Sy Sternberg, ’65 EE, former chairman and chief executive officer of New York Life Insurance Co., will receive the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters from his alma mater, The City College of New York (CCNY), April 23. CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein, ’63, and CCNY Interim President Robert E. Paaswell will confer the degree on him in a ceremony at 4:30 p.m. during the “Frontiers in Physics” symposium presented by the CCNY Physics Department at The Harmonie Club in New York.

IUSL Holds CUNY Laser Intellectual Property Event April 21
The year 2010 marks the 50th birthday of the laser and 40th year since the discovery of the supercontinuum, a light having both high spatial coherence and broad spectral bandwidth. Breast Cancer Pioneer Delivers Genetics Lecture March 16 at CCNY
Dr. Mary-Claire King, American Cancer Society Professor in the Departments of Genome Sciences and Medicine at the University of Washington, will deliver the annual Louis Levine-Gabriella de Beer Lecture in Genetics at The City College of New York (CCNY), 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, in The Great Hall. Her topic will be “Every Unhappy Family is Unhappy in Its Own Way: Genetic Heterogeneity in Human Disease.” The lecture, which is presented by CCNY Interim President Robert E. MIT Professor to Deliver Katz Chemical Engineering Lecture March 15
Dr. Arup Chakraborty, Robert T. Three from CCNY Win in CUNY Nobel Science Challenge
Three undergraduate students at The City College of New York (CCNY) earned prizes in the 2009 CUNY Nobel Science Challenge. Freshman Hyeondo Hwang took first place in the Chemistry category. Sidra Javed, a fourth-year student in The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, and Elaine Cheng, a fifth-year Sophie Davis student, took second and third prize, respectively in the Physiology or Medicine category. The awards were presented at a ceremony Thursday, February 25.

Honors Senior Sam Glickman Presents at Ornithology Meeting
Sam Glickman, a senior biology major in the Macaulay Honors College at The City College of New York (CCNY), presented a poster at the joint meeting of the American Ornithologists Union, Cooper Ornithological Society and Society of Canadian Ornithologists, held last month in San Diego. He was one of only eight undergraduates nationwide to win a travel award from the societies.
