  • Diane Ravitch to Critique Testing in Speech at CCNY April 6

    Dr. Diane Ravitch, education historian and assistant secretary of education under President George H.W. Bush, will critique the role of testing and choice in education in an address 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, at The City College of New York.  Her speech is part of the Doyle and Alba Bortner Distinguished Speaker Series in Urban Education, which was begun in 2010.  The talk is free and open to the public and will take place in the College’s faculty dining room, located on the third floor of the North Academic Center.

  • CCNY Conference Offers Ideas to Spur Economic Recovery

    Four prominent economists and financial experts will come to The City College of New York March 31 to present ideas about the economic recovery and possible scenarios.  “The Way Out of the Crisis: Fed’s Response, Financial Impact and Effects on the Main Street Economy,” a conference hosted by CCNY’s Department of Economics and Business, will run 12 noon to 3 p.m. in Steinman Hall auditorium, located at the corner of Convent Avenue and St. Nicholas Terrace, New York.

    The Colin Powell Center for Policy Studies at The City College of New York presents the 2011 New York Life Symposium, “Civic Engagement in the Era of New Media,” 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, 515 Malcolm X Blvd., in Harlem.  Organized by Powell Center student fellows, the event will explore how individuals and organizations can harness social and digital media to foster collective action and positive change.

  • CCNY Psychologist Testifies In Landmark War Crimes Case

    Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo, former vice president of Congo, is on trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes related to the actions of his country’s troops while on duty in neighboring Central African Republic (CAR).  Prosecutors at the ICC in The Hague say Congolese fighters committed mass rape, killings, and plunder in Bangui, the capital city of CAR, while helping that country’s president thwart a coup.

  • CCNY Student Project Inspires New Open Space in Harlem

    A City College of New York (CCNY) graduate student’s capstone project has led to the creation of new community space for residents of two buildings in central Harlem.  Two adjacent empty lots on W. 140th Street between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. and Malcolm X Boulevards are being transformed into a garden and play area thanks to the initiative of Dawn Mikkelson, who earned her Master of Public Administration degree in May, and her mentor, Dr. Jean Krasno.

  • CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Investigates Financial Behavior

    New York City’s 600,000-plus Dominicans are more likely than Latinos nationwide to have accounts at a bank or credit union.  However, they continue to rely heavily on alternative financial institutions such as check-cashing businesses, and use costly financial instruments such as money orders and tax refund anticipation loans because the mainstream financial institutions are not meeting their needs.

    Kim In-soon, the acclaimed Korean R&B vocalist, came to The City College of New York (CCNY) Thursday, June 3, to visit with students and to present a $10,000 gift to the Colin Powell Center for Policy Studies.  The gift will support the Center’s mission of developing new generations of leaders from populations previously underrepresented in public service and policy circles.

  • CUNY DSI Produces Special Edition of Prestigious Journal

    At the invitation of the Instituto Franklin of the University of Alcalá, Spain, the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute (CUNY DSI) will produce a special issue of its prestigious journal, “Camino Real,” devoted to multidisciplinary monographs on Dominicans in the United States.  CUNY DSI Director Dr. Ramona Hernández and Associate Director Anthony Stevens-Acevedo will edit the edition and conduct a national call for papers.
