Creative Writing Class Inspires Student to Blog on Autism
When Lisa Quinones went to City College’s commencement exercises last month, she had to “fight back tears” when her dean talked about overcoming hardships and obstacles. Ms. Quinones, a legal secretary from the Bronx, had just spent the last five years working toward her MFA degree in creative writing while dealing with the challenges of raising a child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

Four CCNY Graduating Seniors Awarded Salk Scholarships
Alana Lewis, Susanna Nguy, Ivan Santiago and Emma Schatoff, members of The City College of New York Class of 2013, have been selected to receive the 2013 Jonas E. Salk Scholarship awarded by The City University of New York. All four students plan to apply the Scholarship’s $8,000 stipend toward medical school or PhD study.

Three CCNY Students Named Watson Fellows
City College of New York students Shannon Finucane, Corrine Quirk and Asha Whale have received Jeannette K. Watson Fellowships for 2013. Now in its 14th year, the Watson Fellowship program, which is supported by the Thomas J. Watson Foundation, provides summer internships, professional development opportunities and mentoring for outstanding undergraduate students from 12 different New York City colleges and universities.

Junior Alla Zamarayeva Named 2013 Goldwater Scholar
Alla Zamarayeva, a junior chemical engineering major in the Grove School of Engineering at The City College of New York, has been awarded a Goldwater Scholarship for 2013 from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. The Goldwater Scholarship, which is federally funded, is America’s premiere award for undergraduates majoring in math, science and engineering.

Four CCNY Undergrads Win in Two CUNY-Wide Competitions
Four City College of New York undergraduates were winners in two recent CUNY-wide student competitions. Christopher Nickerson, a sophomore in the Division of Interdisciplinary Studies at the Center for Worker Education, won first prize in the 2013 Student Speech Competition, and studio art majors Elizabeth Arias, Bao Lin Zhang and Steven Chalmers took second prize, third prize and honorable mention, respectively, in the visual arts category in the 2013 CUNY / LaborArts contest.

CCNY Graduating Theatre Students Present Senior Showcase May 6
For the first time ever, graduating seniors in The City College of New York’s Department of Theatre and Speech will present a showcase evening of scenes, songs and monologues to the New York entertainment industry. The City College Showcase will be presented 7 p.m. Monday, May 6, at the Producers’ Club, 358 W. 44th Street, in the Crown Theater.

‘Military Times’ Ranks CCNY Among Best 4-Year Colleges in US for Vets
Military Times, a publisher of newsweeklies and a website for armed services personnel and their families, ranked The City College of New York 33rd best four-year college in the United States for veterans. CCNY was the highest-rated New York State public college in the annual survey.
