Extreme Melting on Greenland Ice Sheet, Reports CCNY Team

The Greenland ice sheet can experience extreme melting even when temperatures don’t hit record highs, according to a new analysis by Dr. Marco Tedesco, assistant professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at The City College of New York. His findings suggest that glaciers could undergo a self-amplifying cycle of melting and warming that would be difficult to halt.

CCNY’s Solar Roof Pod Showcases Innovative Technology

Designed and built by CCNY students, faculty and team sponsors, it is meant to be installed on the roofs of commercial and residential buildings in high-density urban centers. New Depiction Of Light Could Boost Telecommunications Channels

Physicists with the Institute for Ultrafast Spectroscopy and Lasers (IUSL) at The City College of New York have presented a new way to map spiraling light that could help harness untapped data channels in optical fibers. Increased bandwidth would ease the burden on fiber-optic telecommunications networks taxed by an ever-growing demand for audio, video and digital media. The new model, developed by graduate student Giovanni Milione, Professor Robert Alfano and colleagues, could even spur enhancements in quantum computing and other applications.

In response to community demand for short-term job training opportunities, The City College of New York’s Continuing and Professional Studies (CPS) will introduce a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program in October. The nine-month program, which leads to New York State certification, is one of several new continued education offerings this fall.

Jay-Sheree Allen, ’11, Named Pearson Prize National Fellow

Jay-Sheree Allen, a member of The City College of New York Class of 2011, has been selected as a winner of the 2011 Pearson Prize for Higher Education. The award, which carries a $10,000 stipend, is given by the Pearson Foundation to recognize exemplary students who have distinguished themselves through commitment to community service while completing their undergraduate studies. Ms. Allen was one of 20 National Fellows chosen in the competition.

Solar Roof Pod Volunteers Learn Skills Not Taught in Class

CCNY Sustainability Program Receives Green Infrastructure Grant

A joint proposal from The City College of New York’s interdisciplinary Sustainability in the Urban Environment master’s program and two other organizations was one of 15 projects funded in the New York Department of Environmental Protection’s 2011 Green Infrastructure Grant Program. The team, which also includes New York Restoration Project, as lead partner, and Stantec Consulting, received $244,920.
