PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING AUTHOR FRANK MCCOURT TO DELIVER SAMUEL RUDIN LECTURE AT CCNY, OCTOBER 28
NEW YORK, October 9, 2008 – Frank McCourt, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “Angela’s Ashes,” will deliver the Fall 2008 Samuel Rudin Distinguished Visiting Scholar Lecture at The City College of New York [CCNY], 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 28, in The Great Hall, Shepard Hall. His address, “If You Want to Know Yourself, Go Teach,” is free and open to the public.

CCNY APPOINTS DANIEL E. LEMONS DEAN OF SCIENCE
October 8, 2008 – Dr. Daniel E. Lemons has been appointed Dean of Science of The City College of New York (CCNY), effective October 1, President Dr. Gregory H. Williams announced today. Dean Lemons, a former Professor of Biology and Dean of the Center for Worker Education (CWE) at CCNY, returns to the College from the CUNY Graduate Center, where he was Associate Provost and Dean for Doctoral Science Programs.

SATELLITE DATA REVEALS EXTREME SUMMER SNOWMELT, RECORD MELTING DAYS IN NORTHERN GREENLAND, CCNY PROFESSOR SAYS
NEW YORK, October 8, 2008 – The northern part of the Greenland ice sheet experienced extreme snowmelt during the summer of 2008, with large portions of the area subject to record melting days, according to Dr. Marco Tedesco, Assistant Professor of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences at The City College of New York (CCNY), and colleagues. Their conclusion is based on an analysis of microwave brightness temperature recorded by the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) onboard the F13 satellite.

REGENTS AUTHORIZE CCNY’S GROVE SCHOOL TO AWARD PhD DEGREES IN ENGINEERING
NEW YORK, September 22, 2008 – The New York State Board of Regents has approved amendments to the Master Plan of The City College of New York (CCNY) to enable the College to offer Ph.D. and M.Phil. degrees in five engineering disciplines through The Grove School of Engineering. In addition, the College will now award these degrees in four science disciplines jointly with the CUNY Graduate Center. The changes, which were adopted by the CUNY Board of Trustees in February, are effective September 1.

Schaffler has been appointed Wallace Coulter and Presidential Professor of Biomedical Engineering at The Grove School of Engineering at The City College of New York (CCNY), Grove School Dean Joseph Barba announced today. NEW YORK, September 18, 2008 – Dr. David K. Gosser Jr., Professor of Chemistry at The City College of New York (CCNY), was named a co-recipient of the 2008 James Flack Norris Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Teaching of Chemistry. The Award, given annually by the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society, recognizes Professor Gosser and two collaborators for developing the Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) Workshop model for teaching chemistry.

NEW YORK, September 17, 2008 – Hasanthika Sirisena, an Adjunct Lecturer in English at The City College of New York [CCNY] and budding fiction writer, is a 2008 winner of the Rona Jaffe Foundation’s prestigious Writers’ Award for excellence. CCNY RECEIVES $5 MILLION NSF GRANT TO ESTABLISH NEW CENTER FOR NANOSTRUCTURE SENSOR AND ENERGY APPLICATIONS
NEW YORK, September 16, 2008 – The City College of New York (CCNY) announced today that it has received $5 million over five years from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish a new, interdisciplinary research center that will investigate new applications for nanostructures and nanomaterials in sensors and energy systems. Known as CENSES (Center for Exploitation of Nanostructures in Sensors and Energy Systems), the center will also investigate emerging technologies and novel characterization techniques for nanostructures and nanomaterials.
