  • CCNY ADJUNCT LECTURER HASANTHIKA SIRISENA, M.F.A. ’06, WINS $25G RONA JAFFE FOUNDATION WRITERS' AWARD

    NEW YORK, September 17, 2008 – Hasanthika Sirisena, an Adjunct Lecturer in English at The City College of New York [CCNY] and budding fiction writer, is a 2008 winner of the Rona Jaffe Foundation’s prestigious Writers’ Award for excellence. The 2006 alumna of CCNY’s M.F.A. program is one of six recipients this year of the only national literary award exclusively for upcoming women writers. Each will receive a $25,000 stipend.

  • CCNY RECEIVES $5 MILLION NSF GRANT TO ESTABLISH NEW CENTER FOR NANOSTRUCTURE SENSOR AND ENERGY APPLICATIONS

    NEW YORK, September 16, 2008 – The City College of New York (CCNY) announced today that it has received $5 million over five years from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish a new, interdisciplinary research center that will investigate new applications for nanostructures and nanomaterials in sensors and energy systems. Known as CENSES (Center for Exploitation of Nanostructures in Sensors and Energy Systems), the center will also investigate emerging technologies and novel characterization techniques for nanostructures and nanomaterials.

  • NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH AWARDS FELLOWSHIP TO PAUL F. THOMSON, ORGANIC CHEMISTRY PhD CANDIDATE AT CCNY

    NEW YORK, September 8, 2008 – Paul F. Thomson, ’04, a fifth-year graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in organic chemistry at The City College of New York (CCNY), has been awarded a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Pre-doctoral Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The award, given by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), provides a stipend of $20,772 per year plus an annual institutional allowance of $4,200.

    NEW YORK, August 25, 2008 – “Palma Digit Art,” 35-enhanced images of the historic and magical capital of the Spanish island of Mallorca, debuts September 5 at The City College of New York (CCNY) Center for Worker Education (CWE) as part of its Hispanic Heritage Month festivities.   • CCNY CENTER FOR WORKER EDUCATION PRESENTS TOP CITY COLLEGE FACULTY IN WEEKLY FALL LECTURE SERIES

    NEW YORK, August 26, 2008 – The City College of New York (CCNY) Center for Worker Education (CWE) will launch the first Distinguished Professors, Distinguished Lecturers and Endowed Chairs Lecture Series in CUNY this fall, CWE Dean Juan Carlos Mercado has announced. The series, consisting of 13 lectures over 15 weeks, aims to expose CUNY students and the Lower Manhattan community to some of City College’s best minds.     NEW YORK, June 26, 2008 –Researchers at the Institute for Ultrafast Spectroscopy and Lasers (IUSL) at The City College of New York (CCNY) have conducted time-resolved fluorescence measurement and optical imaging studies that demonstrate the efficacy of Cytate as a fluorescence marker to detect prostate cancer. Cytate, a contrast agent that conjugates to receptors on prostate cancer cells, exhibited greater fluorescence when applied to cancerous prostate tissue as opposed to normal prostate tissue.
