  • CCNY Professor Gets Grant to Develop ‘Artificial Blood’

    As a post-doc at The University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Ron Koder, assistant professor of physics at The City College of New York, was part of a team that devised a novel method for producing an artificial protein capable of transporting oxygen, similar to human neuroglobin. He was recently awarded a three-year $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to develop an artificial blood that can be administered to injured troops on the battlefield.

  • CCNY Chemists Design Molecule that Responds to Stimuli

    The venus flytrap plant captures its prey when it senses the presence of an insect on the tips of its leaves. An amphiphilic molecule designed by chemists at The City College of New York acts in a similar manner by changing its structure when heated slightly and, then, reverting to its original form when cooled.

  • U.S. Department of Education Awards $5.7 Million to CCNY

    Two grants totaling $5.7 million over five years from the U.S. Department of Education will help The City College of New York improve undergraduate retention and graduation rates and prepare graduate students for careers in the green economy. CCNY was the only mainland institution east of the Mississippi River to receive awards through the Department’s Title V programs for Hispanic-serving institutions at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

    Dr. Jeffrey I. Gordon, M.D., will deliver the 5th Annual Sharon Cosloy-Edward Blank Lecture at The City College of New York 4 p.m. Wednesday, December 8.     Dr. Raymond Tu, assistant professor of chemical engineering in the Grove School of Engineering at The City College of New York, is one of 53 young researchers and educators nationwide invited to attend the National Academy of Engineering’s 2010 Frontiers of Engineering Education Symposium.   • Dean Ranalli to Receive Sidney L. Strauss Award

    George Ranalli, under whose tenure as dean the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at The City College of New York has been transformed into a first-tier design school, will be awarded the Sidney L. Strauss Award from the New York Society of Architects. Dean Ranalli, who has led the school since 1999, will be recognized for outstanding achievements within the architectural profession at the society’s annual awards dinner, November 18.

    Mario Vargas Llosa, the 2010 Nobel Laureate in Literature, will deliver The City College of New York’s President’s Lecture 5:30 p.m. Thursday, November 18, in the Great Hall of Shepard Hall on the CCNY campus at 160 Convent Avenue, Manhattan. Prior to his address, CCNY President Lisa Staiano-Coico will bestow upon him the honorary degree Doctor of Letters.

  • Professor Emeritus H. Jack Geiger Receives Schweitzer Prize

    Dr. H. Jack Geiger, a founding faculty member of the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at The City College of New York, who has focused his career on health, poverty and human rights, has been awarded the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism. He was honored at a dinner during The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship (ASF) Conference, held October 16 in Baltimore, M.D.
