CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Wins NEH Grant

The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute (CUNY DSI) at City College is developing an online resource to study four centuries of Spanish writing styles. The project is supported by a $50,000 start-up grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Office of Digital Humanities. A prototype of the Spanish Paleography Digital Teaching and Learning Tool is scheduled to go live in spring 2013.

New Depiction Of Light Could Boost Telecommunications Channels

Physicists with the Institute for Ultrafast Spectroscopy and Lasers (IUSL) at The City College of New York have presented a new way to map spiraling light that could help harness untapped data channels in optical fibers. Increased bandwidth would ease the burden on fiber-optic telecommunications networks taxed by an ever-growing demand for audio, video and digital media. The new model, developed by graduate student Giovanni Milione, Professor Robert Alfano and colleagues, could even spur enhancements in quantum computing and other applications.

The New York Academy of Sciences Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists acknowledge and celebrate the excellence of the most noteworthy young scientists and engineers in the tri-state New York metropolitan region. This year, a member of The City College of New York faculty, Associate Professor of Biology Robert P. Anderson, was chosen as a finalist in the competition.

In response to community demand for short-term job training opportunities, The City College of New York’s Continuing and Professional Studies (CPS) will introduce a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program in October. The nine-month program, which leads to New York State certification, is one of several new continued education offerings this fall.

Jay-Sheree Allen, ’11, Named Pearson Prize National Fellow

Jay-Sheree Allen, a member of The City College of New York Class of 2011, has been selected as a winner of the 2011 Pearson Prize for Higher Education. The award, which carries a $10,000 stipend, is given by the Pearson Foundation to recognize exemplary students who have distinguished themselves through commitment to community service while completing their undergraduate studies. Ms. Allen was one of 20 National Fellows chosen in the competition.

CCNY Mambo Legend Wins Top Latin Music Award

Mambo legend Ray Santos, the long-time leader of The City College of New York’s Latin Band, is a co-recipient of The Latin Recording Academy’s 2011 Trustees Award. He’ll be honored November 9 with fellow luminaries Manuel Alejandro and Jesus “Chucho” Ferrer at the Four Seasons Hotel in Las Vegas during the Latin GRAMMY® Awards celebration.

Solar Roof Pod Volunteers Learn Skills Not Taught in Class

Yinery Baez, a fourth-year architecture student in the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at The City College of New York, never gave much thought to screws. However, as project manager for the interior of the Solar Roof Pod, CCNY’s entry in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon, specifying cabinet hardware is one of her many responsibilities.

Academics Weigh New Field of Study on ‘Spanish Caribbean’

After close to a year of groundwork, nearly 100 academics representing some 50 institutions from around the world will gather July 25 - 27 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, for an academic conference titled “The Spanish Caribbean: Toward a Field of its Own.” The scholars will discuss the creation of a new field of graduate-level study focused on Cuba, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico plus émigré populations who trace their ancestry to these lands.

CCNY Sustainability Program Receives Green Infrastructure Grant

A joint proposal from The City College of New York’s interdisciplinary Sustainability in the Urban Environment master’s program and two other organizations was one of 15 projects funded in the New York Department of Environmental Protection’s 2011 Green Infrastructure Grant Program. The team, which also includes New York Restoration Project, as lead partner, and Stantec Consulting, received $244,920.

Dominicans In U.S. Subject of Special Issue of Journal ‘Camino Real’

“Camino Real,” the journal of the Instituto Franklin of the University of Alcalá, Spain, has published a special issue devoted to Dominican studies, a growing field in the United States focused on the study of people of Dominican ancestry. This is the first time a multidisciplinary academic journal has published an entire issue devoted to the field. Dr. Ramona Hernández, director of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute (CUNY DSI), based at The City College of New York, and Anthony Stevens-Acevedo, CUNY DSI assistant director, edited the issue.

Dr. Maurizio Trevisan, MD, Named Dean of Sophie Davis School

City College of New York President Lisa Staiano-Coico has announced that Dr. Maurizio Trevisan, MD, has accepted an offer to become dean of the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at CCNY. Dr. Trevisan, whose appointment is subject to the approval of the CUNY Board of Trustees, is currently executive vice chancellor and chief executive officer, Health Sciences System, Nevada System of Higher Education. If approved, he will assume his new position August 1.

Pilgrimage From Japan Honors CCNY Founder July 13

The Hon. Naoki Ishii, mayor of Shimoda, Japan, will lead an eight-member delegation on a pilgrimage to The City College of New York July 13 to honor CCNY’s founder, Townsend Harris, who also opened the first U.S. consulate in Japan. The party will be the 25th from Shimoda to visit CCNY to pay homage to Harris, who founded The College as The Free Academy in 1847.
