Retha Powers’ Book of Black Quotations Nominated for NAACP Award

"Bartlett's Familiar Black Quotations," edited by Retha Powers, is vying for an NAACP Image Award for "Oustanding Literary Work" in the non-fiction category.

A book edited by Retha Powers, acting assistant director of City College's publishing certificate program, has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award. “Bartlett’s Familiar Black Quotations: 5,000 Years of Literature, Lyrics, Poems, Passages, Phrases, and Proverbs from Voices Around the World” (Little, Brown and Co., 2013), is vying for the NAACP’s “Outstanding Literary Work” prize in the non-fiction category.

The 720-page volume is in contention with four other books, including “The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross,” co-written by historian Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Donald Yacovone as a companion to the eponymous PBS television series. Coincidentally, Dr. Gates wrote the foreword for “Bartlett’s Familiar Black Quotations,” and called it “an impressively researched and documented collection of the finest thought produced by writers throughout the African Diaspora.”

The NAACP Image Awards honor outstanding creativity in motion pictures, television, literature, recording and writing/directing. The winners will be announced February 22 at the association’s 45th Awards ceremony in Pasadena, Calif.
