1. Do I have to pay for being in the Student Support Services Program?
No! The services are absolutely FREE. back to top
2. How can the counselors help me?
Counselors can help you in many ways. First of all, since an SSSP student is assigned a counselor until graduation, you have one professional who knows you. He/she will help you plan your academic programs each semester, register you for each semester, consult with you regarding your academic process, inform you about academic policies, advocate for you with faculty and staff, and refer you to tutoring services. Counselors also provide information on majors, careers, career trends, financial information and provide personal counseling for every SSSP student. back to top
3. Will I receive any financial aid if I am in the Student Support Services Program?
Although we would like to give you financial aid, we are not able to do so. However, we provide assistance in helping you receive or earn aid in one form or another. We do this by providing you with information about financial aid and assist you to apply for aid on-line. We also encourage you to join the Federal Work Study program and we offer you with work study opportunities at our offices. We recommend you for awards, grants, scholarships, internships, and jobs. Finally, if you qualify, we would hire you as tutors and student aides in our offices. back to top
4. What kind of personal counseling does the SSSP provide?
If you have concerns about personal relationships, family problems, financial issues and health problems, you should consult with your counselor. He/she will advise and assist you with strategies for resolving or coping with your concerns. All conversations will be confidential. They will also make referrals to professional services and agencies within and outside the college. back to top
5. How can I receive tutoring services?
You can sign-up for tutoring services through your counselor or at the SSSP Resource Center in NAC 7/239. If you have requested individual tutoring, a tutor will be assigned to meet with you at a specific time each week. If you have requested group tutoring, you will be assigned to the session that you have requested. Students taking supplemental instruction must attend all tutoring sessions scheduled. back to top
6. Can I receive help with term papers, assignments and reports?
Yes! We have tutors available to edit your term papers and to assist you in your research. back to top
7. Do I have to participate in all SSSP activities?
No, but we would encourage you to do so. All SSSP students are assigned a counselor and to be part of the program. You must see your counselor twice a semester and may attend tutoring sessions in other divisions and tutoring programs (unless you are in a section dedicated to SSSP). As new students, you will be invited to attend the Career Exploration Workshop in October, the Cultural Program in December and the Financial Aid Workshop in March. back to top
8. Can I participate in other programs such as PRES in Engineering, or CCAPP in the sciences, in addition to SSSP?
Absolutely. We would strongly urge you to participate in any program that you are eligible for at the College and which will help you achieve your career goals. back to top
