Student Support Services Program

February 4, 2004

Dear Student:

Student Support Services welcomes you back for the Spring 2004 semester. Please make a note of the following activities.

Tutoring Services in the Academic Resource Center, NAC 7/239, will begin on Feb 9: Students should sign up for individual and group tutoring in English, Math, Chemistry, WCIV, Psychology, Physics, Computer Science, Economics, Biology, Sociology, Political Science, WHUM and Sociology at the Academic Resource Center. SSSP students in groups of three or more will be tutored on a continuous basis provided you sign up as a group in the tutoring center. Students can attend both one- on- one and group tutoring sessions. Students on probation and those receiving grant aid are required to attend tutoring. Textbooks are available for loan to students.

The Center also offers group and individual computer instructions in word processing, spreadsheets analysis information, Internet access and to check E-Mail. To participate in tutoring activities and workshops, you must sign up with your counselor, or at the SSSP office in NAC 6/148 or in NAC 7/239 or 7/245. Students may borrow laptops for overnight, week-end or seven- day loan. Please contact your counselor for authorization to borrow one. Internet access is also available. Please check the schedule of workshops for the semester at the Academic Resource Center.

The Academic Resource Center is open until 7:00PM Monday through Thursday. Students are encouraged to use the center to study, research on the inter-net, file financial aid forms (FAFSA) on-line, to write papers and complete projects. Computer instruction is available during evening hours.

Program Planning: Students should meet with their SSS counselors at least twice a semester to discuss and plan their academic program or to discuss any academic, personal or financial issue that affect their academic well-being. Students on academic probation should meet with their counselor at least once a month. They should also attend all workshops that are geared towards them. Students who have not seen their SSSP counselors this year are required to do so. Academic stops, for these students, will be placed on their records after March 15.

Online financial aid (FAFSA) 2004-05 applications. If you need help in filing FAFSA online, please contact your counselor. Ms Elba Colon is available from 8:30-10AM each week-day to help you file on line. The first step is to establish an account number or PIN number with the US office of Education. Please contact in NAC 7/239 on Mondays and Wednesdays 3:30-5:00PM to help you file for one online. FAFSA website is www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Zitrin Peer/Tutor Scholarship for SSS students. Seven SSS students will be selected for the Zitrin Scholar Program for the 2004-2005 academic year. Please stop by our office for an application form. All full-time students with 61+ credits (including current semester) and 3.0 GPA are encouraged to apply. Scholars will receive $5000 each. They will serve as peer tutors and mentors to fellow SSS students. For more information, please contact your counselor or check our website at www.ccny.cuny.edu/sssp. You may also stop by NAC 6/148. Deadline date for submission of application is Friday April 2, 2004.

The trip will include visits to the Smithsonian, The Washington Mall - Lincoln, Jefferson and Vietnam Memorials, George Washington's Mansion and other great sites.

SSSP Annual Award Ceremony will be held on Tuesday May 4, 2004 from 4:30-6:30 in the Faculty Dining Room. To be listed in the Program brochure, please inform your counselor of all recognitions, certificates, and trophies, received in writing.
