Hector Marin is a Music Major, born in Madrid, Spain and grew up in Costa Rica. He moved to New York in 1999 and joined CCNY as a Music Major. He has a GPA of 3.714. He is a classical guitarist and his goal is to be a composer to contribute, spread, and enrich people. He believes music can be a powerful tool that can be used for the benefit of people. He has been awarded the Max Greenberg Award, The Mark Bruswick Composition Award, The New York Hispanic Week Youth Scholarship, and the New York Hispanic Day Parade and Gallos Corporation Scholarship. He is also a member of the Golden Key Honor Society. |

Maybelin
Rivera graduated high school from the Dominica Republic.
She is a junior, with a psychology major in the CCNY pre-med program. She
has a GPA of 3.17. She entered the college as an ESL student and her goal
is to be a doctor where she can assist those who have little access to health
care. She plans to specialize in neuro pediatrics to assist children and
their families. She has worked
on campus in the Woman’s Studies department and in the Biology lab. During
the weekends she works as a dental assistant and tutors math and science
to sixth and seventh grades. She teaches Sunday School in her community
church and assists with the distribution of food to people within the community.

Papa
Tall was
born in Senegal and arrived in the US in 1990 to “make it”. He completed
the General Equivalency Diploma to qualify for college. Papa is a Sociology
and Political Science major. He has battled many obstacles throughout his
life. As a teenager he had to find a job to provide for his siblings, now
he provides for his children and wife. His goal is to geta Ph.D to research
and teach how society influences policy making. Specifically he wants to
study how the transplanted Senegalese community is influencing the political
life in Senegal. His services to the community includes translation of legal
documents, and them assisting as an interpreter for the Immigration and
Nationalization Service. He is a CCNY Mellon Fellow and has made many presentations
at theCUNY Graduate Center. Recently Papa was part of the International
Studies Program team that won the Outstanding Team Award in the United Nations
National Congress.

Misu
Paul was born in Bangla Desh . She is a Psychology major
in the Pre-med Program. She has a GPA of 3.5. She loved reading Greek mythology
although she learned English after coming to the US. She plans to pursue
graduate studies in the health sciences. Her goal is to help immigrant communities
learn about health issues and health insurance. She was a Rosen Humphrey
Intern in the Department of Health and Human Services Office in Washington
DC. She is a member of the Golden Key Honor Society and a member of the
City College Honors Council. She is also a CCNY Honors student and a Merit
Scholar. Currently she works as a Research Assistant at CCNY’s Institute
for Ultra-Fast Spectroscopy and Lasers. She serves as a tutor for the Student
Support Services Program. She also volunteers in a nursing home in Mainmonides
Hospital, where she the elderly. She
volunteers in the Brooklyn Public
Library as a book buddy. She was elected senator in the Undergraduate
Student Government. Misu is a student of Omna an ancient art of India. She
also performs Indian classical dances.

Zhanna Soushko was born in Belarus and came from a family where education was revered. When she arrived in the US, she was unable to attend college because she had to earn money to support her family in Belarus. She is an International Studies major and plans to complete a Ph.D. in Political Science and a JD in International Law . She has a GPA of 4.0. She has served as a teaching assistant for her professors, organized a trip to the United Nations and has assisted in academic program planning. She is a volunteer for UNICEF and developed a project that focuses on the issue of out-of-school girls in poor countries. Zhanna designed a Newsletter for the NGO Committee on UNICEF. She also assisted the International League for Human Rights prepare a letter of protest against the mass persecution of journalists in Uzbekistan. Zhanna is a CCNY Fellow, and served as a Rosen Humphrey Intern in Washington D.C. |
